About Bennett

From day one, my students begin training with weapons. The utilization of superior weaponry is essential to have success in an ambush-type engagement - particularly for women. I want my students to feel comfortable presenting and wielding the weapons they intend to carry.

In a world as dangerous as ours, I take pleasure in equipping my students with the skills they need to realistically defend themselves and their loved ones against potential threats.

I began training at the age of thirteen, and progressed fairly quickly. Before I knew it, the adults in the class were asking me questions about the system. I have been teaching regularly for more than a decade.

I am a certified instructor under Tuhon Tim Waid and Mataas Na Guro Clinton Grumbles. I currently hold the rank of "Guro".

About the lesson

Contrary to the structures of many other contemporary martial arts, the traditional curriculum of Pekiti Tirsia Kali actually begins with the long weapon, and ends with empty hands.

The thought process behind this is that the greater the length of the weapon, the greater the difficulty of distance and timing recognition, and so by training the most difficult weapon category first we increase our skill in every weapon category (especially those which require less skills to use, such as empty hands).

As you can see from my example videos above, footwork is integral to the proper execution of the system and is also taught from the first class onwards (as we almost always move as we strike). Once a new student has a grasp of the fundamentals, they’ll be taken through the entirety of the Doce Methodos System, as well as the Contradas System (these two are referred to as systems, but really they are subsystems).

Of course significant fighting skills can be developed relatively quickly, and knowledge of the entire system is not necessary to be a competent fighter.

I have worked with both men and women.

I would advise that student to look for an instructor who can demonstrate their actual fighting skills (maybe with a video), and to avoid those instructors who will only ever teach or demonstrate drills or forms. A flow isn’t a flow if you know what your opponent is going to do, and odds are you won’t know what your mugger is going to do either.
