About Jessica

Ciao! Are you struggling in school with your Italian class? Maybe you're someone who is first learning Italian. Maybe you're someone who has been studying for some time and still find yourself confused or in need of help. Maybe you're someone who enjoys learning the Italian language, and in search of some extra one-on-one help to advance your skills. You will find that my one-on-one services are custom-designed to fit your needs. At initial in-take, I sit down with each student and create a list of concerns, goals, and questions the student has. I give a small assessment to gauge where the student currently is in their skillset. I give the student exercises and devices I have found helpful in my own journey of learning Italian. It is my absolute passion to help as many people as I can who struggle with learning a Foreign Language. By the end of our sessions, you will come to realize that learning another language not only helps you gain further understanding of your primary language, but also opens you up to another world of culture. Whether your goal is to pass a test, pass a class, or truly become confident in your Italian, I can help you.

Coming from an Italian background myself, I have always been immersed in the culture and the food, but not as much the language. This all changed for me at age 11 when I began taking Italian class in my middle school. To my surprise, Italian quickly became one of my best subjects, and I found myself consistently at the top of my class. In 2012, I graduated my middle school, IS72, with the Italian award given at graduation. Yet again, in 2016 at Susan E. Wagner's Graduation Ceremony, I again had been awarded the Italian Award for being the top Italian student. My love for this language and culture measures far beyond any award I have been given. I love to bring insight onto others, and to show them that with the proper attention and guidance, they need not fear or dread a foreign language class.

I absolutely love this work for many reasons. For one, if I can be of any help to someone struggling academically, maybe even socially, etc. I would love to help. In addition, I have firsthand experience of the anxiety and dread many people feel toward learning a Foreign Language. The goal is about so much more than just having the student pass the course. The ultimate goal is to show them how language unlocks so many doors to new people and new cultures, while also teaching us so much about our own.

I fell into teaching naturally. I started out by helping my friends and classmates in school who had questions or were struggling. As I realized I was skilled in this area and actually did help my peers improve in the class, I started to take it to a level of tutoring.

I studied Italian language, literature and culture from ages 11 through 21. I started studying in middle school, all the way through my college. I have one decade of learned experience. In middle school and in high school, I was my Italian teacher's assistant and would help grade tests, projects, papers, and create lesson plans. I have tutored this subject with successful results, allowing the student to, at minimum pass, at maximum excel, in Italian class. I recieved the Italian award at both my middle school and high school graduations.

About the lesson

At initial in-take, I sit down with each student and create a list of concerns, goals, and questions the student has. I give a small assessment to gauge where the student currently is in their skillset. From that assessment, I will be able to tell where the student's strengths are and where the areas in need of most review are.

I've worked with middle school students. I've worked with high school students. From time to time, even college students who are typically in the beginning stages of learning Italian.

My best advice would be to look for the following:

Has the teacher spent time learning and improving their skills at different levels? Do they seem kind, passionate and patient? Have they received any honors or distinction in their subject?

I consistently received A's in every Italian course I took, even at the college level.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should think about if they notice a pattern- for ex: Student A repeatedly gets the colors wrong on tests. This is something worth reviewing. If a student finds that they've made small errors on their assignments but understands why it was marked incorrect, that is okay. It is normal to make mistakes. Looking for patterned areas of confusion, error, questions usually indictaes that is an area worth focusing in on.
