About Hellyn
I attribute my interest in teaching to my amazing mother, who is a Director and Educator for Montessorri schools in the Bay Area in California for children ages 2-7 years old. Growing up she had started a Montessori home pre-school, where I observed first hand her method and educational programs.
After co-founding my wearable technology design studio in NYC four years ago, I've had the opportunity to host and teach workshops on wearable technology and fashion design at places such as New York University, Columbia University, Parsons School of Design, Bard Graduate Center, Première Vision in Paris, and the New Museum in NYC. It brings me joy to observe, teach, as well as learn from students from all backgrounds and ages.
Our design studio is also regularly invited to panel discussion events around the world on technology, design, and women entreprenuership, and I have built a network to mentor and help students, as well as supporting women of color entrepreneurs in technology and design. I continue to support and mentor graduate students from my alma mater at New York University, Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP).

Here is a typical process I work with:
- Learn about the student's background and interest. What kinds of technology are they interested in and/or using at the moment?
- Understand how best I can support their education and research.
- Share a brief background what I do and my interests.
- Share a syllbus and schedule for the subject I'm teaching.
- Work with the student to agree on a class schedule, and build in time to answer any quick questions outside of that schedule.
- My approach is to work collaboratively, and offer resources and tools to help the student's research.
I have worked with students and professionals from all backgrounds and ages who have a keen interest to learn about design and technology.
I generally have worked with high school students, undergraduates, graduates, professionals in the design field, and children 5 plus and up.
All are welcome!
Bring the disoveries you have researched, and share why they are interesting to you.
If you have a sketch of the prototype you would like to build, please share it. It can be a rough sketch. It is mainly to help us start a conversation on what you are thinking to build, and how we can develop the next steps together.
Be able to talk through your concepts conscisely so we can start to build a schedule on how to achieve your goal.
Anytime I meet with a new student or professional at a workshop or panel discussion event, I'm filled with joy to see their excitement about design and technology, and what they brainstorm to do next with the materials they just learned.
I'm always excited to hear about new projects students are developing, and try to support any way I can to help make their project(s) happen.
I believe teaching and learning is a collaborative process, and it helps both the student and teacher to learn more about the world around us as well as their own research.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why is this technology important for your research or project?
How do I envision the user experience with the project I'm building?
Who am I building this for?
How long will this take me to build?
Are the resources I need readily available? Or will I need to budget in time for delivery and shipment?
