About Kayla

Hello! I have been in social studies education since 2009 and have had the good fortune of teaching in a variety of different settings including museums and classrooms. I've taught classes ranging from the History of the Soviet Union to AP World History. I've even led Model United Nations! I have taught in NYC, DC, and currently teach Upper School History in St. Petersburg, FL.

To say I love history and teaching is an understatement. Having the ability to explore and share my passion for history with my students is very rewarding, particularly when I see the lightbulb go off or watch students master historial writing. In addition to teaching students historical material and concepts, I have a great deal of experience in helping students make connections, developing history writing skills, and teaching various AP-style questions/prompts.

After graduating from USF with a BA in history in 2007, I promptly moved to NYC. I happened to stumble into the Brooklyn Historical Society one day and asked if they were hiring. I was in luck! They were! They hired me as a museum educator and I started working there shortly after. I was hooked.

I have a BA and MA in history and have been teaching for 12+ years.

About the lesson

I like to have my students fill out a "Getting to Know You" sheet that not only gives me some insight into their personal interests and personalities, but gives me an idea of what they like or dislike about learning history. It also allows me to see what skills they would most like to develop during our time together.

I have built museums with 4th graders and have taught U.S. History Honors to 12th graders. I have had the privilege of working with many students in between.

It's useful to know that social studies is not just "learning the facts" of dates and names. You have to be able to make connections, understand trends and figure out the meaning behind historical documents among other things. While challenging at times, it can also be very fun. I firmly believe this!

At my current school we have something called "Service Week". For my project, I worked closely with a group of upper school students in the school's history archive to pull and organize primary sources for an upcoming history exhibit at school. It was a week of hard work but it paid off. I can't wait to see the finished product!
