About Joanna

I am a problem solver. As a classroom social science teacher for decades, I taught thousands of students how to use the written word effectively. I use tried and true techniques to quickly boost writing confidence and success.

I strive for those moments and relationships when I can use the academic discipline to develop transferable skills.

As a senior in college, a friend convinced me to take Education Psychology with a school observation component as he needed a reliable ride to the school placement. One day, my mentor teacher had a family emergency and the school asked me to cover her classes; barely 20 minutes in, I realized that I was a teacher. It's a calling.

I have Bacherlor's degrees in History and Political Science from Washngton University in St. Louis, Social Science, Health Edication and Multiple Subject teaching credentials from Sonoma State University and was a classroom teacher for almost 20 years.

About the lesson

2. What is the student's timeframe to achieve these goals?

3. Are there specific readings associated with the goals/assignments?

4. For essay/papers, I like to discuss the prompt before the student begins work, develop the building blocks for a successful paper and then edit with the student before submission.

In the classroom, I taught all of the social science classes that were offered by my district from 6th-12th grade. These included World History, American History, American Government and Economics from remedial to Advanced Placement levels. I have worked privately with students to perfect college essays and develop transition skills from high school to college.

Any worthy teacher is going to challenge you so success is more likely if you feel an easy rapport with your tutor. I'd rather take Introduction to the Spiders of South East Asia with a teacher I liked than 19th Century Political Philosophy with one who failed to inspire me. True teachers use the discipline to teach a higher purpose.
