About Matthew

I am a career History Instructor at the Community College level. I teach American history, but my education and interests also has me well-versed in aspects of European and Military History as well. I can teach anything from a general understanding of historical events, to skills in analytical writing that is so crucial, yet so undertaught, for higher education. I hold a Masters Degree in History, and nearly a decade of teaching experience from subbing to teaching my own college courses. I currently teach American History for both the State Center Community College and College of the Sequoias districs. I enjoy sharing the stories of history with my students, and showing them how they are more connected to, and inspired by, that history than they realize, and hope to plant a love of the subject in anyone I work with.

I enjoy telling the stories of history and seeing my students react to those stories. I also enjoy showing how they are still connected to history, and are still influenced by it, even if they don't realize it.

I started through subbing while I was still in graduate school, and found it to my liking.  I wanted to see how much farther I could go down in education, and eventually found my way to teaching at the community college level.

I hold a Master of the Arts degree in History, and hold roughly a deade of experience in various teaching and tutoring jobs: SES Tutoring, K-12Subbing, teaching Community College and Dual Enrollment.

I break with the ice with introductions, then begin asking questions to see how I can better help the student.  If they have a question on a subject to research, I will help them bounce off ideas for tackling that subject.  If it is how to format a paper, I will show them examples of how a paper's formatting works (usually Chicago Style in my discipline).  My goal is to help the student in the way they need, so listening to the student is key.

I've worked with pretty good qualities of students overall, from a variety of backgrounds.  I have had students of various disabilities, ethnicities, and orientations, and I have worked well with them all.

Make sure you can state clearly what you need help on with your subject.  A teacher or tutor can only help so much if they don't have the whole picture on what the student needs aid on.

I have enjoyed seeing some of the comic book artwork my teaching has inspired in one of my students, how the events I describe can manifest in the imagination or on a page.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What exactly do I need help on?  How can I convey that need clearly?  Are there easier ways to get the help for what I need?
