About Maurizio

I'm a late bloomer when it comes to playing the guitar. It took me years of perseverance to get my playing to a respectable level of competency. Because of my deep desire to learn how to play, I was able to truly understand and experience all the many pitfalls that lied ahead.

Many of the things I have learned I wish I learned earlier in my development as it would have saved me years of time. I have been fortunate to have some very good teachers and this has helped greatly in building my confidence and seeing another perspective.

The guitar is an amazing instrument. It has a wonderfully versatile sound, is portable and universal in its tone. Playing music has changed my life. I can't imagine it not being in my life. It brings me joy, relieves stress, it's a creative outlet and most importantly allows me to entertain/share this gift with others.

Because learning to play the guitar took me so long, there is that part of me that wants to help people that are just starting out. I want to share with them things I didn't know and see their development happen much faster than mine. It's a way to experience victory over my own shortcomings. Not many things make me happier than sharing my musical knowledge with others and seeing the look on their face when a breakthough is made.

To me the most important part of any endeavor is a solid foundation. I want to build that foundation with my students. I want them to learn how to practice smart over practicing wrong. Better a focused 5 minute practice every day than an hour of incorrect practice.

I truly believe that the principles and techniques I will share, will not only help you play guitar but will instill life lessons for anything you do.

I was born to be a singer-songwriter/guitar player. I grew up listening to my mother sing old Italian folk songs/opera and my older brother of 20 years -playing his records of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, James Taylor etc. I started taking formal guitar lessons when I was in college at the age of 18. After about a year of lessons, I started my first band (power trio) and performed at local bars and concert venues such as the legendary QE2 and Bogies. I opened up for bands such as The Spin Doctors. After playing in a few more rock bands during the 90's, I decided to focus more on singing and songwriting as a solo acoustic act. I found the acoustic guitar to be much more muscular and percussive - which served as a catalyst for developing my own style. In 2013 I decided to take more formal guitar lessons for about 2 years in which I delved deeply into guitar theory and harmony using the Berklee College of Music methodology. I feel that today I am at the top of my game, but always working to improve. I am currently working on Travis Picking, and incorporating my own style.

About the lesson

Every student is unique in how he or she learns to play guitar. The goals and time frame, lies within the individual. The first lesson is mainly getting to know the student, making sure we are on the same page as far as expectations and that he or she has the proper tools to move forward. Example, make sure the guitar is properly set up and the correct size for the student's hands.

As a rule of thumb, I believe that if a student faithfully follows my lesson plan, he or she should be a very solid/intermediate level guitar player within 5 years (assuming the student began taking lessons without any prior experience).
