About Mel
I got started in teaching when I was volunteering my time as a writer at a senior citizen community on Vashon Island during my MFA studies. I fell in love with the process and have pursued teaching opportunities since then.
I have my BA in Literature/Writing from Evergreen State College, an MFA in Hybrid Poetics from Goddard College and my PhD in Transformative Studies from The California Institute of Integral Studies.
I have taught in the K-12 environment - teaching reading and writing. I have experience teaching college level writing classes as well. I also spent some time traveling around Thailand teaching ESL to young learners.

Our first lesson is generally centered around finding out what the student already knows, and where the holes are in their knowledge so I can determine what to focus on. We also speak about the student’s goals, and then figure out the best way to proceed.
I equate my teaching philosophy to a quote by Jiddu Krishnamurti (philopsher, teacher and writer). He said,
“A school is a place where one learns about the totality, the wholeness of life. Academic excellence is absolutely necessary, but a school includes much more than that. It is a place where both the teacher and the student explore, not only the outer world, the world of knowledge, but also their own thinking, their own behavior.”
