About Samantha

As a recent college graduate who studied Rhetoric & Media. I also worked for three years at Lewis & Clark College's Writing Center, where I gained experience and training in teaching skills related to the writing process, including but not limited to research, grammar, structure, editing, drafting, outlining, and citations. I also have experience teaching writing to middle schoolers.

About the lesson

I typically start each session establishing what our goals are for our time together. While we're working together, I check in with my student to make sure we're on track, and when we're done, I leave my student with a bit of summarizing advice to think about and work on until our next meeting.

During the meeting, I make sure I'm not just giving my student the answers, but helping them to develop the skills so they can find the answers by themselves in the future.

I try to keep things fun and engaging, relating the subject material to broader picture subjects and to the students own interest. I encourage curiosity and lifelong learning by building an environment where student are allowed to pursue interests and failure is turned into a positive learning experience.

I have the most experience tutoring college age students writing essays in the humanities, but I have also worked with middle schoolers on book reports, persuasive essays, speeches, and creative writing. I have also tutored ESL students in vocabulary, grammar, and writing, and worked with various students on lab reports and application essays.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
My advice to anyone looking any sort of tutor is to ask yourself: "What do I want to get out of this? How does the answer to that question relate to my long term goals?" For example, if you're looking for help on writing better essays because in the long term you want to be a researcher in biomedical sciences, you might want to look for a tutor who is interested in scientific writing and who shares your passions.
