About Elizabeth

Hello! My name is Lizza, and I love to teach and learn. In 2015, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA from the University of Arizona with a Creative Writing degree. Currently, I am obtaining my tutoring certification through National Tutoring Association.

In terms of experience, I have been a tutor for three years. Additionally, I have completed a year of graduate school at Duquesne University for teaching English Language Arts.

In my lessons, I use inquiry based learning, project-based learning, and explicit/direct teaching methods. In addition, I have experience working with students of all ages and learning abilities. Currently, I work with students from elementary school to the Master's/PhD level.

Services I offer include:

Homework help: I help students study for tests, quizzes, in-class essays, and complete at-home assignments. Within these lessons, I embed vocabulary acquisition, study skills, and grammar skills.

Enrichment: I create lesson plans based on students' interests in reading and writing. For example, I am supporting several students who are writing science fiction narratives. I guide them through each step of the writing process.

Revision: I offer revision and editing support for students who need a second pair of eyes on their written assignments.

What I love most about tutoring is getting to know my students and what excites and inspires them to learn. In my sessions, I consistently check in with my students so that they understand the material and why they are learning certain skills/information. Finally, each of my lessons is highly individualized: I implement strategies and activities based on my students' interests, strengths, needs, and learning styles.

I started teaching when I was quite young. As a child, I loved teaching my little sister how to do everything. For example, I taught her how to write cursive. Later on, in ninth grade, I participated in a volunteer program in which I tutored fifth and sixth grade students who struggled with their schoolwork. This exciting experience solidified my interest in becoming a teacher.

Currently, I am obtaining my tutoring certification from the National Tutor Association (NTA). I have been tutoring students of all ages and abilities for two years.

From 2020-2021, I spent a year at Duquesne University to earn my master's in teaching secondary level English Language Arts. However, I decided that tutoring was a much better fit for me than teaching in a school setting.

In 2015, I graduate Summa Cum Laude from University of Arizona with degrees in Creative Writing and French.

When I work with a new student, I ask many questions so that I can get a sense of what they are interested in, what their struggles are, what helps them learn, and what their strengths are. Furthermore, I ask students if they have any questions about me and how I work. The cornerstone of my work is student-centered and I plan each lesson based on the answers that my students initially give me.

I have worked with students in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Additionally, I have worked with students of all abilities. My students have ranged from being exceptionally gifted to needing extra help with reading and writing. Finally, the work I do with each student is vastly different. For example, I have revised science fiction narratives with several students, I help students study for tests, and I also create project-based lesson plans using inquiry learning strategies. Whatever the student needs, I aim to provide.

I would tell students to check in and see if they feel connected to their tutor, if the tutor makes them feel seen and heard, and whether or not the tutor seems passionate about learning and teaching. A solid relationship between the tutor and student is the foundation for long-lasting learning.

Recently, I helped a student write an expository research paper about black panthers. Before we started the project, she was incredibly intimidated, but I told her we would take things one step at a time. Thus, I guided her through the planning, writing, and revising process. At the end, I asked her how she felt about finishing her first research paper. She smiled, and said, "Oh gosh..." She could not find the words to describe her pride! That made me deeply happy.
