About Heather

I have been in the education field for over 22 years as both a classroom instructor, learning specialist, educational therapist, executive functioning coach, and tutor. I am a reading specialist and learning specialist experienced in working with student K-grad school. I am certified in Orton-Gillingham, Linda Mood-Bell, and Wilson reading methodologies as well as proficient in AP teaching, tutoring, and test prep. I am also experienced in tutoring for the ACT, SAT, LSAT, and GRE as well as tutoring in all subject areas including history.

I enjoy helping students gain the tools they need to succeed. Every day is a new opportunity for me to learn something as well and I am very appreciative of that fact. I feel very lucky to be able to do the work that I do and interact with the amazing students that I am able to work with.

I have always known I wanted to be a teacher. I began teaching right out of college.

I hold a master's degree in varying exceptionalities and 33 hours of graduate course work. I am an Orton-GIllingham Fellow, hold certifications as a Reading and Learning Specialist, Executive Functioning Coach, and Educational Therapist.

About the lesson

I typically begin with a phone or skype interview to get an idea of the student, the work, and also the class. Next, I like to do an informal assessment for my records. If any IEP's or psychological evaluations are involved I review those as well.

I have worked with special needs, gifted, and everything in between from K to college level.

I would advise them that you get what you pay for. I will not just make sure this one particular assignment is done correctly, but that you understand the concepts and subject matter as well.

I recently had a student score a near-perfect score on his SAT.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should ask themselves if they have the time to devote to tutoring in addition to their other activities. They should also ask themselves what their goals are for meeting with a tutor. Are they needing to understand the subject matter better? Prepare for a test? They also need to be clear what their expectations of their tutor will be.
