About Charlie

I've been teaching high school students for two years, most recently serving as an Academic Teaching Assistant with Columbia University's Freedon & Citizenship program, where I taught critical and analytical writing, political philosophy, and civic engagement. My particular skills are in teaching writing, reading, and editing essays, including college admissions essays, the critical reading sections of the SAT and ACT, English and Social Studies courses, and tutoring for Beginner to Intermediate Spanish.

My teaching philosophy goes far beyond the basic classroom matter, and I strive to create a welcoming educational space which fosters curiosity and creativity. I firmly believe there are no stupid questions. Nonjudgemental learning environments allow students to fully grow into themselves as learners by eliminating the barriers that keep kids feeling self-conscious. Learning is fun, and an environment which embraces curiosity in all forms helps each and every student access the particular joy of learning.

I studied English Literature at Columbia University, where I wrote a senior thesis in post-modern American literature, served as editor-in-chief of a literary magazine, and competed on a slam poetry team. I am currently teaching a summer program on health inequities to high school students across the country.

I studied English Literature at Columbia University, I've taught a year-long class, and edited college essays, poems, and educational essays for over four years. I can tutor in Spanish up to college-level intermediate and teach most Social Studies classes.

When working with a new student, it is important to get to know their goals as well as their learning style and areas of interest. Knowing a student wants to go to a certain college is obviously important for editing their essays and helping them construct a good application, but even more important is understanding what motivates them to do so; do they want to study biology because it interests them, or because they think it will give them good career outlooks? The answers to these questions will inform how they write about their goals, and ultimately give readers a better understanding of who they are.

As an educator, I strike a balance between hard academic skills and softer emotional skills, which allows me to have some really important conversations with students. In the most recent class I taught, the work I did to establish an open, welcoming environment allowed my students to honestly discuss their personal immigration narratives and how those have influenced their senses of self and why they do good for others.

I've worked primarily with high school students, but am able to teach writing and reading, and edit personal or analytical essays on any level between elementary and college. I can teach Social Studies and Spanish on an elementary to high school level.
