About Riana Jane

The main influences of my work as a tutor are my two years of teaching as an Ethnic Studies Educator in the SFUSD and my B.A. in Environmental Studies. Having mastery over language is crucial in both of these fields, and from my education/experience I believe I am able to help students find their personal strengths as writers and communicators.

I enjoy giving students the space to discover their voices and strengths. I believe that it is my role to be a source of guidance and knowledge, while ultimately giving way for students to hone in on their own interests, beliefs, and abilities.

I have a B.A. in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University. In this field, it is imperative that you are able to synthesize information from complex documents in order to create accessible, persuasive works. This degree has prepared me to be a competent English tutor by giving me ample experience in analyzing scientific journals, legislative bills, and government documents in order to produce essays and presentations that accurately represent social/environmental issues.

I was also an Ethnic Studies Educator for (concealed information) Educational Partnerships for two years. During these two years, I taught Filipina/o American History, Culture, and Art to SFUSD students. Through this experience, I have learned how to engage with students in ways that are relevant to their individual, academic needs.

About the lesson

With each new student, I hold space for them to share with me how they would like to be identified/referred to. In addition to this, I encourage them to share any concerns they might have with their schoolwork or academic performance. Then, I assess samples of their recent schoolwork and identify where my assistance is needed to aid their learning process. Ultimately, I strive to create an atmosphere of respect and safety, so that my students will feel able to ask for the guidance that they need and produce schoolwork that they can feel completely confident in.

I have worked with high school juniors and seniors and I have worked with second graders. I will always strive to meet students where they are so that I can provide the best academic guidance that I have to offer.
