About Hannah

Hi there! I am currently a college student heading off into the medical field. I have taken all AP and Honors English courses during my time in highschool. I have also taken English Lit/Comp. and Humane Letters (which is a class that focuses on Socratic Seminars and analyzing classic texts, such as Shakespeare)! I graduated highschool summa cum laude with a 4.3 GPA, though truthfully, I did struggle with school for a long time. I immigrated from Japan as a child and was not able to speak English until 2nd grade so I was very behind. I was often a B and C student in middle school, but with the help of tutoring and my own hard work I was able to graduate amongst the top of my class. I am also able to teach foreign students English as I am bilingual in Japanese. I hope to create confidence in my students and help them succeed :)

I started teaching my freshman year of highschool after being hired by my school to tutor fellow students in exchange for volunteer hours. In 2019 I was offered my first job in Japan to teach English.

In highschool, I was appointed the position of a mentor in which I represented the school in a leadership position. I also tutored for 4 years in subjects such as Math and English to fellow students at my school. In addition, I have experience teaching English to Japanese students back in 2019. Currently, I am teaching English at a cram school in Japan.

About the lesson

During my experience in peer tutoring, I prefer to have the student come to me and explain the struggles they have in class or show me examples of previous grades and assignments. From there I can analyze what areas need improvement, how they can practice, and create a plan to start a course that guides them to be able to study on their own. I will teach them any necessary skills, help with homework, and offer study tips as well.

I have worked with students ranging from Grade 6-10 both male and female. I also have experience working with students in Special Education due to my time working as a mentor for my highschool. I have also taught many foreign students.

As I have had many tutors in the past, my best experience has always been to find a tutor closer to my age. Teachers who have just recently graduated highschool or college have known the generational struggles of school and can relate to you on a deeper level. They are also easier to talk to and teach personal/social lessons to learn in school, rather than purely the mechanics of doing homework and taking tests.

I am currently in Japan teaching English for a cram school and it has been a very important leaerning opportunity for me. I enjoy the challenge of working with foreign students and teaching English and grammer regardless of the language barrier.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should spend some time on their own reflecting on what they would like help on. They should ask themselves "Why am I gettings these results/grades?", "What areas did I struggle with?", "Why is this hard for me to understand?", "How is my learning environment?", "How do I study within and out of the classroom?" etc.
