About Katharine

I was nominated by my professors to be a Writing Fellow, which is a paid position that includes tutoring fellow college students in English/language arts studies. I am very approachable and I love working with students! I had a 3.99 GPA in high school and I have a 3.7 GPA in college so far. I love all of my teaching and grammar courses in college and I have had a very positive experience with tutoring students. I know how confusing writing and grammar can be, and I would love to help you feel more confident in your abilities! :)

I love knowing that I have helped students understand difficult concepts that they previously struggled with. As a tutor, I like to address student questions first and then break down the rest of the difficulties to work though into steps. My goal is always to leave the student feeling more confident and able than before, and I will work with them until they feel like they can complete their work without feeling confused. I know what it's like to answer a question and come back feeling more confused than I was before I asked for help, and I will always do my best to be clear with explanation so that students don't ever feel that way!

I was a teacher's assistant in high school, and I fell in love with the job through observing the behind-the-scenes details of teaching. I know firsthand what a difference a great teacher can make in someone's life and I have aspired to be a teacher ever since! I love all of my teaching classes in college and I can't wait to get in the classroom and start meeting students!

I am a senior English teaching student at Utah State University and I have been a Writing Fellow for two years now. I love being a Writing Fellow because it has allowed me to help my fellow students who may be struggling with English literature and essay writing. I have had nothing but positive responses from those I have tutored, and I look forward to meeting other students who also feel like they need some help!

I love to get to know students and their goals for the future. It is also nice to ask students about their individual strengths and struggles so that I can help them break down their struggles into manageable instruction sessions. I also like to provide lots of examples and helpful resources for students to refer back to if they ever feel lost. I am very prompt with getting back to students, and I always try and approach every day with a positive attitude!

I have worked with a very diverse set of students. Many students I have worked with are English language learners and students who do not share my English major. I love helping everyone and it is such a rewarding experience when students come back to me for help!

I would advise students to not be afraid of asking for help! English is a very difficult subject because a lot of it is subjective. Writing can also be very confusing because it seems like every teacher says something different about grammar and formatting. I am here to help though, and one of my main goals is to make it the least stressful or scary experience that it can be. I am very knowledgeable about my subject of expertise and I would love to help add some clarity to your learning experiences!

A recent event I am fond of was when I was helping an English language learner with revising his informational essay about being a pilot. He was unfamiliar with APA format and it was clear that it was something he was uncomfortable with using. To help make the concepts clearer, I told him that each source should mimic a "sandwich." This means that each source used should have an introduction citation (the top "bun"), a quote (the middle of the sandwich), and the end citation (the bottom "bun"). This really helped him understand the concept and he had a much smoother time with APA in-text citations from that point on!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would highly recommend students to look through the assignment description and grading rubric for every assignment they are struggling with. Oftentimes, there is pretty detailed instruction that can help students understand what they are expected to do. I realize that it won't always help, and there are plenty of situations where it would be better for students to reach out for clarification, but it is a great place to start!

I am negotiable with pricing. I usually charge about $20-35 per hour session of tutoring, but I understand that may not be feasible for all students. If having me as a tutor is something you are interested in, please contact me! I don't want the pricing to deter you from getting the help you need.
