About Katie

Hi there!

My name is Katie Howarth and I am currently a 10th & 11th grade English teacher. This is my sixth year teaching and throughout the years, I have been able to teach multiple grade levels as well as content areas within English Language Arts. Along with my teaching experience, I have also been tutoring students over the past ten years. I graduted Magna Cum Laude from Miami University with a bachelor's degree in Integrated Language Arts in 2014. Over the years, I have taught AP Language, Honors British Literature 12, College Prep American Literaure 11, Creative Writing, and College Prep World Literature 10. When I taught AP Language, every one of my 30 students passed the AP exam and earned college credit.

In terms of tutoring and teaching, I have expertise in the following areas:

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was young. Being able to live out my dream to educate and support high school students is an absolute blessing. I am a relational teacher in the sense that I care about the student as a whole. Grades and learning material are of course crucial to the success of a student but I also believe that looking at the student as a whole helps to ensure long term success.

I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher. I distinctly remember being in my first grade class, admiring my teacher and telling my mom how I wanted to be just like her. Teaching is what I was born to do and I truly love my job. Being able to work with high school students and watch them grow is the greatest joy in my life.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Integrated Language Arts (7-12).

I am currently earning my master's degree from the Ohio Writing Project at Miami University.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, the first session is to establish what issues need to be addressed or where the gap in learning might be. We will look at current assignments in the student's subject of need and will work together to create a schedule that not only helps the student to complete their work, but to also help them engage in learning and understanding the subject at hand.

I have worked with all sorts of students throughout my career. I have worked with grades 7-12 from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. I have worked with students who have IEPs and I have worked with AP students.
