About Lia

My approach is student-centered and skills-based. I help students develop productive reading and writing habits as well as their instincts to know how to apply them. As for the student-centered part—my job is to help students learn the skills they actually need. One size does not fit all.

I love helping people learn! I want to be a teacher eventually and there's little more incredible than the way my students light up when they learn something new.

My parents are both teachers, so it's in my blood! :D

Kidding aside, my first tutoring job was helping a family friend's second-grader in math. Math wasn't my strong suit, but we got by. I've been working with kids since I was eleven, so that certainly helped. I also spent a year doing the City Year program, where I worked in a third-grade classroom and tutored in reading and math. Most recently, I spent two semesters working for my university's writing center as a peer tutor.

I did two months of intensive training in preparation for my job at an educational nonprofit (City Year) and took a tutoring seminar class for one semester as part of my role tutoring for my university’s English department. The rest of my knowledge comes from experience!

About the lesson

For my first tutoring session, I like to have something of a consultation where I talk with the student (and parent, if applicable) about what the student needs. I also use this time to get to know my student! I fully believe that you are a person first and a student/teacher second, so this is my opportunity to learn about you as a person.

I have tutored students from elementary school to undergrad. However, these days I only work with children in middle school or older.

Ask LOTS of questions, and be honest about what you need.

One of my college students I worked with went from getting an F on her first paper to a 100% on her final paper—in just under fourteen weeks.
