About Alex
Hi there! I'm admittedly a bit new to tutoring, but I have a firm grasp of English grammar and conventions that I believe would be incredibly helpful to struggling students. The part of my job I'm most excited about is helping students do their best and succeed at whatever they do. My specialty is English and English-related fields, but I can offer advice and tutoring in other language-related fields as well.
What I enjoy the most is being able to help students achieve and surpass their goals. Nothing matters more to me than that, and seeing them shine is what I look forward to the most. I have previous experience as a copyeditor, which means that, when it comes to essays and writing, I'm excellent at proofreading and editing and have a lot to pass on to students.
I started tutoring in an official capacity when I started working recently at the Huntington Learning Center in South Riding, Virginia. However, in the past, I have tutored on an unofficial basis and aided students and classmates in understanding the assigned material. I started teaching because I have a passion and a drive to help others, and I believe that this is a good way for me to do that.
Right now, I am employed part-time at Huntington Learning Center, which has been giving me experience working with students. That aside, I am a recent graduate from the University of Mary Washington, with a Bachelors of Arts in English: Creative Writing. As part of my degree, I worked on the staff of my school's literary journal as the lead copyeditor for the prose team. While not specifically related to tutoring, I believe this experience makes me especially prepared to potentially help students with essays and other writing assignments.

My typical process for working with a new student is to first get to know the student. While I don't want to turn tutoring into a purely social time, I want to be able to connect with the student on a personal level to really be able to help them succeed.
In the past, I have primarily worked with high school and college students, and those are the students I believe I am most equipped to teach. However, I am more than willing to work with younger students.
When looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise, the biggest piece of advice I have for students is to find someone who works with them and their learning style. Anyone can just tell a student what they're getting wrong and what they need to work on--I believe, however, that a more effective teacher is one that actually works with the student to understand them and help them understand in turn. Students should find a teacher they can connect with, rather than someone who just tells them what's wrong.
A recent event I am fond of is when I first started working with one of my students at Huntington, a high school student preparing to take the SAT. We were going over her answers to the homework, and she was feeling demoralized because she got some of the questions wrong. I talked her through it and helped her find the correct answers, and I was able to help her realize her strengths and that she does have the skills she needs to achieve her goals.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should think first about what it is that they want to gain from the sessions they attend. Having specific, attainable goals in mind can go a long way toward helping a teacher work with a student to achieve those goals.
