About Bethany

I am a certified English teacher. I have had my license since 2017. My certification is for Secondary English (Grades 7-12), but I have plenty of experience with younger grades, too! I have worked as a long-term substitute in many different grade levels and for several different subjects. I also have experienced working as an English as a Foreign Language instructor in Japan.

My certification is in English, but I am also fairly confident in social studies, government/economics, and fine arts subjects. I could probably also help little ones with very basic math skills, though I am not confident in teaching upper-level math skills.

I will work with you or your child with any suject material that is accessible to me. Currently, I am helping a student through the Reading Bear curriculum. If you wish to provide the content for your homework or a specific curriculum you would like to work through, I will accommodate any curriculum. If not, then I will be glad to work through free study materials with you to help you gain a greater understanding of the skills you wish to master.

Ever since childhood, I always liked to be a helper to my peers in the classroom. After graduating undergrad in 2013, I went out into "the workforce" without knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I always planned on going back for a Masters, but I didn't know what I wanted to do.

Just a couple of years into working, I had already done some substitute teaching because I had missed the school environment. Then, when I got an office job, I looked longingly out the window just after 3:00 to watch the school buses driving by, and I realized that I needed to be a professional educator.

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching received from East Tennessee State University in 2017.

Both before and after my teacher training, I worked as a substitute teacher with experience across grade levels and subjects. Since becoming certified, I have had one year of full-time classroom teaching and several short and long-term substitute roles for a school system. Interim teaching maps well onto tutoring, because I have to pick up wherever a person's regular teacher has left off and provide both strucutre and flexibility.

In 2019, I spent 6 months in Japan teaching English as a Foreign Language to small group classes, full-time.

About the lesson

I learn what specific skills the student needs to practice or master. Then, I discuss which curriculum or material would be best with the student and/or the student's caregiver. I am very flexible, and the most important aspect of one-on-one teaching is communication.

In spite of the fact that I am certified for secondary education (Grades 7-12), the bulk of my experience has been with elementary school students. This is because as a substitute, both before and after my certification, there are more elementary school teachers and therefore more positions. I have worked with every grade level at least a few times.

I have also worked with Japanese university students, so my experience is pretty broad!

I learned that online tutoring via Discord was actually pretty straightforward and easy from a teacher's perspective. If you decide to hire me, I hope it will seem easy and straightforward to you!
