About Josh

I mention sports and television often when tutoring. For example, college-level poetry analysis is a lot easier when considering how rap songs utilize the same poetic devices as classic poems. As a coach of a sport which is not widely popular [Lacrosse], I have to explain the fundamentals or passing, catching, and shooting in terms of more popular sports such as basketball, hockey, football, and golf. I believe there is always a way to understand some thing in terms of another, and I believe that is the best way to learn challenging concepts.

(concealed information)

I enjoy helping others communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. The process of carving away some words or chunks of words, and adding new words in their place, is invigorating to me, and it becomes more exciting as we get closer to the final written product!

I began coaching lacrosse three years after I started playing in high school. I fell in love with the sport and also the opportunity to help and work with the next generation of athletes and learners. I coached summer lacrosse camps, then began coaching my own private lessons, and then, I tutored a few players on English concepts, and helped them revise their essays.

I have been coaching young athletes for almost a decade, and I've learned to be patient with new learners, and I've learned how to re-shape new concepts so that they can be easier to understand.

Find what the student already knows (movies, sports, music, other subjects) and use that knowledge as a foundation to build upon.

I've worked with student-athletes aged 5 - 18, and I've proofread and edited countless college essays written by my college teammates and friends at University of Dallas.

What we get out of a task or a process is limited by what we put into it. Some students believe that tutors are just combination-teacher-babysitters, and it is especially difficult to try & help teach someone if they're not putting in the effort on their part.

I recently learned 3rd & 4th grade common core mathematics in order to help tutor a 4th grade student. I have enjoyed learning the new methods and it's been fun to break them down and explain them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have I practiced this on my own?

Have I asked other classmates, teammates, or friends for help first?

Is there any ampifying information on Google Scholar, Youtube, etc?
