About Mary

I am an English teacher with a passion for helping students succeed in all areas of English literature and language. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Masters of Arts in Teaching as well as five years of classroom experience. I am comfortable tutoring at all levels, including college, and my areas of expertise include SAT/ACT prep and essay writing/revising.

I was drawn to teaching because of my AP Language teacher in high school. His passion for the subject matter was inspiring and caused me to want to pursue a degree in education.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and I am currently pursuing a Specialist degree in curriculum and instruction. I have 5 years of experience teaching all levels of high-school English.

About the lesson

Before working with a student, I talk with them extensively about their English strengths and areas for growth, as well as their goals for our tutoring sessions. Based on that conversation, I come up with an individualized plan of study that prioritizes the student's needs.

I have worked at the middle school, high school, and college levels. I have worked with co-taught students, on-level students, honors/AP students, and ESL/ESOL students.

Look for a tutor whose areas of expertise match your academic goals, but also find a tutor whose personality fits well with your own. At the end of the day, you are building a working relationship and ideally it is a positive one.

My fondest moments in education are watching my former 10th- and 11th-grade students as they walk across the stage at graduation. It makes my job extraordinarily rewarding to know that I was a small step on their path to success in high school.
