About Heather

Rather poke yourself in the eye repeatedly than write? I may be the tutor for you!

University English instructor, award-winning writer, and PhD student, I provide practical writing coaching for students from high school to graduate school.

I can help you with grammar, pre-writing techniques, organization, argumentation, research, citation, and ways to break through writer's block.

Writing doesn't have to hurt, and we can work together to make sure that you gain the skills and experience you need to feel more confident in writing.

Available for long-term tutoring, project-specific tutoring, or college admissions assistance. Adult, multilingual, and special needs learners very welcome.

I never planned to be a teacher, and yet when I look back at previous jobs I see I've been one all along. From teaching swimming as a teenager, to teaching incoming DJs when I worked in radio, to teaching salespeople and customers about software and networking when I worked in IT, to teaching English after I went back to school to get my Master of Arts in English, I think it was inevitable that I would end up teaching. For many, teaching is a vocation; for me, it was fate.

I teach college composition and literature classes and have years of experience in tutoring students of all levels, from middle school to graduate school, in on-on-one sessions. As a result, I'm good at identifying creative ways to help students learn, incorporating reading, talking, and doing.

Additionally, I have had the privilege of working with many multilingual students, adult learners, and learners with differing needs, and I appreciate the unique strengths and viewpoints students such as these bring to the classroom and tutoring session.

Last but not least, I know that each of us has our own talents, likes, and dislikes. My tutoring sessions are a judgment-free zone where we can own the frustrations and challenges that can be a part of writing, then work together to kick them to the curb.

Before we work on anything else, we need to explore your writing goals. Do you want to work on grammar? On organization? On crafting the killer and oh-so-profitable scholarship essay? On banishing writer's block? Or just oh-no-panic-everything-aaaugh when it comes to writing or literature? Whether you're preparing for an exam or just hoping to survive English 101, we'll develop a plan to get you where you want to be--and with style!

I've worked with middle school students, high school students, college students, graduate students, adult students, multilingual students, students with dyslexia, students with sequencing disorders, students with autism, students who lived, breathed, ate, and dreamed English, students who hated English and writing and literature with the fire of a thousand suns, and students who were deeply worried that they would not be able to write.

In each case, I worked with students to help ensure they could do good work more easily and with less stress.

If you're looking for a teacher, especially one for whom you have to write and effectively pour your brains out on a page, you need to find someone with whom you can develop a rapport. A big part of that rapport is being comfortable with the teacher, which in turn means knowing you can be open about your concerns, that you will receive honest, productive, and supportive feedback, and that the teaching relationship will be conducted within a framework of mutual respect.

If you feel like any of those things are missing, find a new teacher. You'll benefit from doing so.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about your goals:

Do you feel you will benefit from someone who will work on your current assignments with you, or someone who can provide additional, fresh materials to support or build on your current skills?

Do you want a longer-term tutoring relationship, or do you only need to survive an assignment?

Do you need any special help in one area, or do you need a tutor who can work with you holistically, across a discipline?

Do you want to earn straight As, or are you good with "A C will set you free!"

Then, think about your learning personality:

Do you need someone who is serious, focused on work, and will get you in and out as quickly as possible, or do you need someone who can also make you laugh and support you in the psychosocial aspects of learning?

Your goals may change as you progress and learn. Will you want to stick with the same teacher, or are you comfortable moving on when necessary?

These questions are just a starting point, and what is most important is knowing what you want to get out of tutoring, and what you need in order to get that.
