About Priya
Hi there!
My name is Priya, and I'm a 22 year old graduate student at DePaul University studying advertising. I graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2019 with a B.B.A. in Marketing and a B.A. in English. I've spent all five years of my undergraduate and graduate career working at both universities' writing centers to help students with essay writing, grammar, creative fiction, and resumes -- it was at the campus writing center that I realized how much I love teaching! The look of epiphany on a student's face when they finally make a breakthrough on their thesis or when they discover a cool synonym for an ordinary word is priceless, and it makes my heart feel full when one of them tells me I helped them ace a term paper or clarify their thoughts in a college essay.
I love all things literary and verbose, and that's why I want to continue my work helping kids find their voices in reading and writing.
Living in Chicago on a student budget is hard, a fact that I learned during my freshman year at Loyola. I knew I needed a job, so I walked up to the job postings bulletin board at the Student Center and saw a flier for the writing center. They were hiring tutors, and I thought to myself, "Well I'm an English major, and I've never gotten less than an A on a paper." So I took a tab from the flier, scheduled an interview, and the rest was history. I spent all four years of college working at Loyola's writing center, and when I started graduate school at DePaul, I knew I wanted to teach some more, so I became a graduate tutor at their writing center as well.
I graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a B.B.A. in Marketing and a B.A. in English. I'm now pursuing a Master's Degree in Advertising from DePaul University. Studying three areas that are extremely communications and writing heavy has allowed me hone my existing writing skills beyond what I believed I was capable of. Of course, I wanted to share the wealth, so I signed on as a writing tutor at both of my schools' writing centers, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only did I get to learn from my students (because the best way to learn something is to teach others), but I also got to help repeat students become stronger writers on a wholistic level rather than simply help them ace their term papers.

First thing's first -- I like to get to know my students! I listen to how they talk, what their passions and priorities are, and why they're interested in what they're writing about. That helps me get a sense of their voice, which is important to show through in their writing.
I really believe that the key to being a great writer is also to be a strong reader, and so when a student gets stuck, I often tell them to leave their paper alone for a day and ready something they enjoy. It can be a novel, a magazine, a column, a blog -- anything -- as long as it refreshes their linguistic minds!
So far, most of my students have been college students. However, I do spend my summers helping high school aged kids write their college essays!
Find a teacher that engages you and makes tutoring something to look forward to -- it's always more fun to learn from someone who has something in common with you, and if it's fun to learn, then you'll learn more!

Since I'm not a professional tutor, I don't have a pricing system. I do, however, understand that financial means can play a big part in whether or not a student can access help. In an effort to help as many students as I can with the highest quality of instruction, I range my rates from $12 - $17 per hour, depending on the type of assignment and age of the student. I'm always happy to negotiate and work with you to find a price point that will work for both of us -- knowledge shouldn't be for sale!
