Discussion and a short quiz help both the student and I gain insight as to where any potential deficits lie. We then exchange our expectations and set learning goals. Last, we read a portion of the curriculum, and I assign a homework task.
I have worked with all types of students, including those with little to no motivation, those who set no learning goals, and those with learning or physical disabilities.
Self assess, and be very honest and upfront with yourself. Try to understand what you need and why you are not meeting your goals autonomously. Look around at the tutors and compare experience, expertise, and price.
I recently tutored a young woman (Research Statistics) obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree. She initially struggled with the validity of qualitative methods of measurement. However, at our third tutoring session, she finally understood the value, and went on to receive a B+ in the class (she was receiving a D when she hired me).
