I will introduce myself as a school adherent and education advocate. When I was in grade school, my experience mirrored many children’s and I did not like class. I felt that school wasn’t relevant to me and that my teachers were always searching for a “right” answer that I was never able to provide. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school that I realized that reading, writing, and education in general can be powerful and gratifying.

One of the many reasons I became a teacher and tutor was to help students have more agency and confidence in their education. I believe that if my teachers helped me see myself as a lifelong learner, intelligent, and capable, I would have tried to embody these attributes sooner.

I believe that school and education are immensely impactful to the lives of everyone. Learning about literacy, language, and literature exposes one to beauty, various types of communication, and the tools to thrive and question beyond the boundaries of a classroom.

My philosophy to tutoring boils down to this: I want everyone to feel that reading and writing is accessible to them, and hopefully, even a little bit empowering and enjoyable. People are often frustrated in the subjective nature of English, but as a certified teacher, I can help decode and identify the concrete skills and concepts that instructors are assessing. Also, I can provide advice on how to capitalize on its subjectivity, so one can feel that they are developing their own voice and ways of thinking.

So, whatever your desire for tutoring may be, I can offer research-based scaffolding techniques to build reading and writing skills, a range of experience, and positive reinforcement as you expand your knowledge.

About the lesson

It is as important to identify what one knows as what one does not know. Starting off with a brief conference to assess gaps in reading and writing is a successful foundation to assess following steps.

For example, we might start off having a discussion about what book the client is reading to learn whether they know key events, theme, character development. From there, I can provide strategies that help demystify that stumbling block.

I have worked with both middle and high school students, primarily grades 9-12. I have taught all demographics, which requires me to have a diverse arsensal of strategies to ensure that every student can participate and learn.

Details

My pricing depends mostly on two factors:

1) Do I need to travel? If so, then that will be factored into the price.

2) Does the client need help with homework or maybe a deeper dive into challenging skills? In case of the latter, I will have to work beyond the tutoring timeframe to develop an individualized curriculum, which will affect the rate.
