About Erica
Hi there!
My name is Erica Richter and I have a passion for writing! I am a college student studying Musical Theatre with a minor in Journalism and Media Studies. I am offering private writing tutoring, and the option to just submit an essay for proofreading/suggestions! This can be done via email or google docs, no phone call necessary :) My experience includes working as a writing tutor at Eastern Michigan University's Writing Center (1 year), where I specialized in academic writing. I want to offer an affordable and accessible service to people who want a little boost in their writing.
When I was taking my gen-ed writing course at Eastern Michigan University, my professor pulled me aside and recommended I add a writing minor because I was very talented. I told him that I did love writing, and would look into adding a minor. When I scheduled an appointment with the head of the Department of Writing, she helped me plan for my minor and informed me of the University Writing Center. She asked me to submit a portfolio of my work to be considered for a position as a writing tutor. I did and was selected as one of fifteen new recruits. We took a 3 credit hour class on how to teach writing while interning as tutors and then were hired on to the official Writing Center Team. I have now worked there for a year and absolutely love it.
I currently work as a tutor at Eastern Michigan University's University Writing Center, where I tutor other college students. I take many writing classes for my Journalism and Media Studies minor, and I just love to write! I have been published once in a poetry anthology, and have won several writing contests through scholarship programs and collegiate writing competitions.

I first ask the student what the essay/piece is about. If there is a prompt/assignment, I will ask to see a copy of it or for the student to explain it to me so I can assess the needs of the writer. If the student just wants me to proofread/edit their papers, I then ask for access to their file via email or google docs. If the student would like to talk live, I will schedule a FaceTime/Zoom call and request access to the file. I will then ask the student to read their paper aloud while I follow along. We will use the rest of the appointment to discuss flow, word choice, tone, writer concerns, purpose, clarity, grammatical/spelling errors, and more. I am flexible with this process, so whatever works for you will work for me!
I work primarily with undergraduate college students but am very willing to work with high school and middle school students as well. I am actually only 17 (I started college at 15 because I graduated early), so I am a perfect choice for high schoolers since I am still that age. Even if you are an older student though, please don't discount me because of my age! I may be young, but I am a strong writer and would love to help you out!
I would say to pick a teacher that is focussed on your process, not theirs. Every writing tutor has a process that works for them, but we must be able to adapt to our students! Every writer has their own writing process and a unique voice. Tutors need to cater to this. My job is to make you the best version of yourself as a writer, not to teach you to write like me.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Here are my favorite questions I ask students:
What are your goals with this piece?
What are you trying to say?
Who is your target audience?
What do you want the audience to "leave with" when they read your essay?
