Dear Parent,

I'm super enthusiastic about giving English lessons to kids in Pre-K through 4th Grade, because there are so many words to teach them, and so many ways to achieve quality learning!

Before I begin tutoring with a brand new student, I love to start with a quick question game so I get to know them a little bit before we start going over the "boring" stuff. That way, they know I care about them, and they can feel confident I won't give up on them when they struggle with something.

Whether through fill-in-the-blank sentence prompts, or using syllables to make learning words simple, teaching kids is always a fun time, as long as I stay attentive to every kid's interests and learning style.

It's always a pleasure to work with kids, and to talk to their parents about how their progress is going. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!

I started teaching essay writing and planning as a senior in high school, to other students in my classes who were struggling to format their essays. I used color-coding format to help them understand the different levels of organization that form a well-structured essay. Additionally, I asked them different questions about the text to help them figure out how different quotes could connect with each other to form an argument.

As a freshman in college, I began to teach my preschool-age little sister English lessons. My little sister had very little patience with reading, but when I applied the color-coding method, learning became easier, and much more enjoyable for her.

I am currently a sophomore attending Drew University, majoring in Studio Art with minors in Creative Writing, Math, and Film Studies.

My intentions are to work at animation studios in the departments of narrative storyboarding and character development, so I can release the animated rendition of my own graphic novel.

I'm passionate about understanding why people think the way they do, and what experiences dictate their attitudes toward life. This mindset is the inspiration behind my novel, and I hope, through this tutoring job and my personal work, that I eventually can educate young people how to be kind to each other in spite of our differences.

About the lesson

At the very first session, I like to talk with the child's parents to get an understanding of what the child's strengths and weaknesses are in academics, so I can develop an original study plan that I will use only for them. I would love to see an excerpt of their English homework at this meeting, so I could see how I could format future exercises to allow for consistency with the level of difficulty I'm seeing in their schoolwork.

From the notes that I take from the first session, I will produce a lesson plan that suits the child's needs individually.

For example, if the child struggles to read, I will come to the second session prepared to write the following on a digital whiteboard: a series of sentences with illustrations on a similar topic (food, different household items, etc.). In another case, if the child struggles with spelling, I will come prepared with different "fill-in-the-blank" or "rearrange the letters" exercises to get them up-to-par with spelling.

If the student comes to the session with homework they need help with, that works too! But I'm just as happy to give them my own English learning exercises to give them some practice.

I have tutored both high school students and young elementary school students in a variety of subjects relating to English (essay writing, essay planning, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, etc.).

A word of advice, for the parents of little ones, preteens, and high school kids alike: make sure your tutor is communicating well with you. Before you get into the material, talk to your tutor about what helps you learn, and what interests you in school.

Do you like music? Do you like art? Do you like to read?

All these questions are super important, because if you like music, it's very possible that you respond better to someone speaking to you, instead of writing words on the whiteboard. In contrast, if you like art, you might learn more effectively with diagrams and pictures instead of just talking through the problem.

Every student has different learning styles, and so has a different voice. What makes you different doesn't make you weak: it makes you strong, because you can help other people that might not know as much as you do.

During quarantine, I was always fond of doing exercises with my little sister. She was always so excited to do butterfly stretches and other yoga moves with me, or to let me teach her how to do a pushup or a plank correctly.

Let this be a takeaway for the parents: I'm totally going to be that person to help your kids get the wiggles out before "serious" time! I can also help your kids stay active during this time of being stuck at home! :)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For my grasshoppers out there! Before a tutoring session, it would be extremely helpful if you could ask yourself:

1. What am I in control of?

2. What can I do to help myself?

3. What is my tutor in control of?

4. What can they do to help me succeed?

When you ask yourself these questions, you reflect about what you're able to accomplish through your effort, and how that is different from what your tutor can help you with.

I'm not here to give you the easy way out! I'm here to help you learn skills you can take with you into middle school, high school, and college, so you can learn different kinds of material much easier!

Details

Although I have tutored children both in elementary and high school, this is my first time tutoring children as a job. Consequently, I know I have a lot to learn, and will be making my starting salary $20/hr.

However, for those who stick around, I will be sure to remain attentive to any suggestions and constructive criticism. My goal is not to be a perfect tutor: it is to improve with every student I meet.
