About Kristy
I assess my students to see what their challenges and strengths are. I like to use learning about how they learn, and we can focus on these approaches. I like to get the diagnostic data from the school if they are willing to share it. This provides their Lexile level which leads to a real understanding of the areas in which they need the most help. Getting the math diagnostics would help as well. It's important when tutoring to get a true picture of the student, not only academically, but socially as well. It's hard to learn something if it's not interesting!
Seeing the progress students make is so satisfying. I like the work because I learn more about my own teaching when working with a student one-on-one. I enjoy learning from my work tutoring because it's a different sort of planning but must be re-thought because you aren't planning for a full class.
I have a Ph.D. in educational leadership. I've coached many teachers after having spent 15 years in the classroom. My roles have included assistant principal and principal and instructional consultant to charter schools. Currently I am teaching AP English IV and English III.

I begin working with a new student by listening to his or her story-personal and professional. Then I ask why they want a tutor. I follow up with a brief assessment that tells me more about them and their strengths and challenges.
