About Carroll

I have tutored for years. I also work as an English professor. I've been doing both since 1991. So, I know the ropes: what teachers are looking for, what problems to work on in an essay. I understand the writing process. Writing is a skill that's developed with practice, but a tutor can speed the process up a bit. I give positive and critical feedback. I listen to students and what the need from me. I am happy to adapt.

I love writing and discerning how it works. Every writer is different, but at the same time most problems are common. I like to demystify the process and foster a person's ability to write, read and think critically. Writing is personal. A person expresses their beliefs, values, and concerns. Writing is important. It tells the world who the writer is and changes the world, even if only a small part. I've been tutoring and teaching 20 years. We've got this.

About the lesson

First, I read the assignment on which the student is working. Next, I read over carefully what the student has written and make notes or discuss with the student the ideas for completion of the assignment. I then discuss the most import revisions necessary or requirements that should be met (and how to meet them). With Zoom, conversation is possible so it will be easier to move through the paper. I always tell the student what he or she does successfully. Then, if there is time, the student and I can discuss tips on writing well!
