About Jan

Hello, my name is Jan Zhou. I am a Fashion Designer and an Artist with 15 years of university teaching experience in fashion design.

I grew up in Shanghai, China, graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA, concentrated in Fashion Design. After my graduation, I interned with Cynthia Rowley, later moved on and worked with Victor Costa as his Assistant Designer in New York City. Two years later, I founded my own studio in Chicago, and my collections were sold in high-end boutiques. But life sometimes does its part. I was offered a teaching position in Shanghai, by a Singapore education organization - Raffles Education Corporation. That is how I started my teaching career, and I did find fulfillment by sharing my experience with students. I have acquired international design practices and university teaching experience through affiliations with internationally recognized organizations, such as Bunka Fashion Institute, Japan, Instituto Marangoni, Italy, and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. While I was in Shanghai, my experience in that rapid expansion of the Modernization environment raised questions about my own practice in fashion. I couldn’t relate my ethics to this phenomenal instant culture. What I believe is that whatever we create has its own life. I shifted my focus to artisan, developed a new technique of embossing and created an art form. After five years of experimentation and exploration, my work has been exhibited at national and international contemporary art galleries and museums. I received a Design Patent granted by the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China in 2015. Additionally, that also reflected my teaching methodology. I am inspired by ancient teaching methodology and focus more on teaching students with fundamental principles, helping them individually with their own learning capability and boosting their creativity. I think that is the right direction and the results are very encouraging. Some of my students have started their own fashion label; few became professional fashion illustrators; many pursued their MFA in fashion design, textile, or fashion illustration at prestigious universities, such as Central Saint Martins, Royal College of Art in London, Parsons School of Design, New York, and Bunka Fashion Institute, Tokyo after their graduation. Recently I returned to the States and this past summer I taught at the Rhode Island School of Design in their 2022 Pre-College Summer-Program.

After I graduated with honors from Columbia College Chicago, then interned with Cynthia Rowley and moved on to worked with Victor Costa as his Assistant Desiger in New York. In 2001, founded my own studio in Chicago, participated fashion weeks and other fashion events, my collection were sold in highend boutiques here in Chicago. In 2006, Raffles Education Corperation Singapore found my profile online and invited me to teach in their RafflesDeisgn Institute in Shanghai, China. Here we are, I started my teaching career, later found so much fullfillment to share my experience with students.

I graduated with BA, concentrate on Fashion Design from Columbia College Chicago. I was also trained in Animation, worked as in-between animator for 3 years.

I taught pre-college Drawing Foundation - major in Fashion for high school students to develop a fashion portifolio at Rhode Island School of Art. I taught Fashion Drawing, Fashion Illustration courses for over 10 years in Donghua University Shanghai, China.

About the lesson

I prefer talking to students to learn what their goal and back ground of drawing experience. Then creating a plan for them to start.

any age, ethnic and education background students are welcome.

There is one key point students need to learn is how you like the style of the tercher's teaching.
