About Milerka

Milerka is a Dominican-American street dancer, artist, choreographer, and instructor from Middletown, NY who discovered her passion for dance at the young age of 3. She began performing with her high school and college dance teams before being Introduced to Kyra "Ms. Jay" Johnson, owner and Executive Artistic director of New Beginnings Performing Arts Studio. Milerka auditioned and joined Ms. Johnson's dance company in January of 2010, and began her technical training in ballet, modern, African, Afro-Caribbean, and praise dance. The opportunity to teach at New Beginnings opened her up to new experiences, eventually leading to an Assistant Director position at the dance school. Along with her studies at New Beginnings, she trains in New York City excelling in street styles like Hip-hop, Vogue, and Waacking, as well as other styles such as Afrobeat and Dancehall. Milerka has performed throughout the Westchester and NYC areas including BB King's in Times Square, The Gatehouse in Harlem, at Riu resorts in Jamaica, and has taught workshops all along the east coast. She has worked with the likes of Excel Garner, Tavia and Tamara, Derek Mitchell, Gigi Torres, Jamal Josef, Charles Smith, and is also a member of Hip Hop Theory The company led by Christina Cruz, and Le Ballet Afrik led by Omari Mizrahi. As an instructor, she teaches dance to kids and adults of all ages. Her ambition, business savvy, and her desire to give back to the community is what fuels her drive to continue pushing in her passion to bring Movement, Inspiration, Love, and Enlightenment to the world!

Dancing is my passion! I love meeting and connecting with new people who are eager to learn and want to push for success. I enjoy good energy and love vibing with anyone who is willing to connect with and learn from me :)

I began volunteer teaching in 2012 at New Beginnings Performing Arts Studio, and then moved into after school programs. Eventually, I ended up teaching during school hours at a Charter Highschool.

About the lesson

I always want to make sure the student is comfortable so initially, I like to talk for about 5 or 10 minutes to get to know them, and see what I can do to include activities that match their personalities. Then, we do a warm up, go through some drills, and put together some reinforcement combinations that will help the technique stick. I like to try and figure out the student's learning intelligence, and focus in on ways I can help them understand what we're working on.

I have worked with students of all ages, all backrounds, within the school system and outside of school. I have also worked with students with some learning disabilities.

My advise would be to ask lots of questions to be sure you are getting exactly what you need, and to assure the work relationship will be one of progress and growth!

We just had our annual production at New Beginings and it was phenomenal! The students always work very hard to make these shows happen, and it is something that I am always proud of.

*Am I looking into this as a hobby, or as a profession?

*Is there a specific deadline for acquiring the desired skill set?

*Am I willing to be consistent and work independantly in between lessons?

Details

My price is $65/Hour. This covers services, as well as any travel and/or studio rental fees. Classes can always remain at 1 hour, but I usually recommend an hour and a half. I am versed in different styles and have professional teaching experience.
