About Iris
I'm a professional artist/engineer; I'm also the eldest of 5 children. There are 10+ years between myself and my siblings. My older sister approach lends itself towards tutoring children quite naturally. My siblings have told me I'm calm, mellow, patient, and set a comfortable tone to explore their creativity. I would be a great fit for anxiety prone children or anyone looking for art therapy.
I enjoy interacting with the child as they attempt to work through the crafting project. One detail I take pride in is if it becomes clear the activity is frustrating the child, I will pivot and ask them what their muse is telling them to do. I will encourage an activity to go not as planned as teaching the creative process.
I studied Architecture for 7 years at the University of Oregon.

I get to know them by providing non threatening activities that are soothing. Frequently their personalities come out and I have a starting point to start planning activities for them. I love seeing their eyes when they realize I had been listening to their idle conversation and had a direct response. After a few successful sessions, I can then create a more rough set of themes and lessons for that student. For example, an anxiety prone child complaining about being unchallenged in math was given exercises in embroidery. It was a math lesson about Cartesian planes, number lines, and chart reading.
I have primarily worked with anxiety prone children.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If the student has sensory or physical needs, please communicate those upfront. I'm sure we can work out something. No request or accommodation is too "silly" to bring up. For example, I cannot work with graphite pencils. My students are not provided graphite pencils in my lessons and will not notice they are not there. I provide the alternatives I've used myself as part of the lesson. There's always solutions for every need.

Details
I charge $50 an hour. Light snacks and water/coffee/tea provided. My whole angle is being like that aunt or older cousin that teaches you things in a cozy room with finger foods.
