About Cooper

I'm currently a CS PhD student trying to become a professor

I have experience teaching college classes and I think that my approach has been huge for giving students an intuitive, deep understanding of CS and an enthusiasm for the topic they didn't know they had!

I'm tutoring for teaching experience and for money to get through grad school --

I love teaching though and will give it my ALL !

I love the idea of giving new students a better start than I had -- so they can go even further than I have

I especially also love the moment when a student can visibly connect the core concepts and finally 'get' it.

I study the machinations of learning in computer (humans too!) and it is fascinating and wonderful and I take any chance I get to do a little bit more of it

I started by running a club weirdly enough

I run 2 clubs at my college right now and, because of them, I began lecturing on machine learning (If you want ot hear about ML I am happy to give you more material than you could imagine)

I appraently love it -- I had been tutoring and enjoying it but this was my first time actualyl lecturing properly and it was a blast.

After I had done that for some time some students started asking for advising from me and I fell in love with the entire experience of being a professor

I have been lecturing for 2-3 years now and have been tutoring for about 6

I lecture every week and am currently a TA (that's the one who does all the work for a class) for 2 different 300 junior level college classes

I've also taken education classes in college/grad school on how to teach CS specifically

My main mode of improvement is asking for feedback from all the students I teach and tutor and applying their feedback -- this has honed my teaching quite a bit in the past years

First you need to establish a baseline of what they know already -- not just the superficial but the deep aspects.

I will make them describe the topic that they are learning about and decide what the key missing aspects of their understanding are

This can be done in tandem with approaching their schoolwork -- if they have a homework that needs doing I will have them walk me through their understanding and then help them apply what they do know and learn what they dont

The key aspect here is that they can see deep core concepts in an intuitive and fun way.

It is especially important for the first lesson to be fun and give them some moments of clarity in satisfying ways

All types:

Begginger -> Advanced -> Expert

Although I have the most experience with begginers

low-income -> high-income

all backgrounds really

I'd say find one that can explain like a peer

Older people in CS tend to talk about the topic from a place of sterility and objectivity that can make the entire topic feel like a jargon fueled nightmare

Find someone who wont BS to sound smart and find someone who can describe it to YOU in a way you can actually learn

that is leagues more important than just knowing the topic -- although both are important

I asked for feedback on a lecture I gave in one of the classes I TA for and I got VERY kind feedback

Some people said they want me as the professor and that they will choose their classes off of which one I am TAing

It legitametly made me feel emotional -- and so proud

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should really think about what makes sense (so far) and then figure out what made those things make sense

Every students has a different style that helps them learn and its the teachers job to teach it that way

If you have that style in mind it makes it incredibly easier

Details

I will charge a reduced cost for the first session so that you can feel out if I'm a good fit for you. (20/hr -- which is actually less than I get paid for my TA work)

After you decide that I'm a good fit for you I will charge a regular rate of 40/session, which will include me preparing material for the session

If you are a student struggling both in school and with money then I'd be happy to discuss a lower rate :)
