About Rachel

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I'm a recent college grad from UC Berkeley, and I'm currently a part-time student at UCSD. I have education experience through teaching weekly health education classes to ninth graders, and I also tutored third graders weekly in their classroom. Through these experiences, I learned to use a trauma-informed approach and growth mindset with students. I've taken college level classes in many different departments including English, Biology, Chemistry, Public Health, and Political Science. I understand this time without formal schooling is difficult, and I would enjoy coming up with a curriculum plan that works for you!

I taught health education classes to ninth graders as a sophomore in college. This was one of the best things I've done, and it made me realize how much I loved being an educator and how much I enjoyed supporting students.

I taught classes to ninth graders for 3 years, and also tutored third graders for 2 years. On a more informal note, I have younger siblings and have tutored them in multiple subjects for most of my life.

About the lesson

I like to get an in-depth knowledge of what the subject the student needs help with. Things like a syllabus, teacher notes, homework examples would be helpful for me to see so I can get all the information I can to support you! I also want to learn more about a student's learning style, like if they learn best from visual aids, or talking through problems, or listening to others talk through problems. Basically, I want to learn more about what students are learning and how they prefer to learn it!

I've worked with a variety of students ranging from 3rd-9th grade.

I have many areas I feel comfortable tutoring students in, but my advice for all areas is the same: find someone you feel comfortable with! Other than the subject matter you need help with, the most important thing for tutoring is your relationship with your tutor. Something else I consider highly important is honesty with your tutor. It's better to admit when you don't understand a concept than to pretend and move on.

For my most recent birthday, my family and I had a great dinner together at one of our favorite restaurants. It was a lot of fun to spend time with them!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it's helpful for students to recognize where they need help, this can be specific or general. For example, a student may have trouble with a specific step in DNA combination, or a broader question of an essay topic. Most of all, it's important for students to remember it's ok to feel challenged!
