About Edith
I am a licensed NYS certified teacher in both biology and chemistry, with over 20 years of teaching experience. I am very familiar with all aspects of the living environment, chemistry and physics high school curricula, as well as all science middle school curricula. Although I am retired, I still enjoy teaching and supporting students.
I enjoy helping students find their "aha" moment when the light bulbs go off, and they finally understand the concept. I have also seen the progress made by the overwhelming majority of my students. After receiving subpar grades, I am happy when they receive good grades, pass the regents with confidence, and avoid summer school! In addition, I have also had students that wish to move good grades to really great grades, and find it rewarding to support students that are motivated to reach high academic standards.
I am a certified NYS biology and chemistry teacher who is currently retired, but still enjoys teaching and coaching. I have many years of experience teaching at the high school and middle school levels. I also train new teachers and serve as a mentor, with a company called Teaching Matters.

Usually, I will ask what unit the student is currently learning, and ask what struggles he or she is having. I might ask to see any handouts or notes the students has already been given. When teaching a topic, I might explain the concept, and/or model a problem that needs to be solved. Then, I will ask the student to solve a similar problem with me, while questioning his or her thinking process. It is imperative that the student explains the WHY of a concept or problem, so that he will be able to answer various problems with slightly different twists and turns in the future. I also use quite a few online simulations/models in my tutoring so that a concept can be better visualized. I also scaffold questioning, so that I ask students easier questions in the beginning, and increasingly more difficult questions toward the end, after they have reached a greater understanding of a concept.
