About Lauren

I am a pre-medical graduate student planning to attend medical school in Fall 2021. I've taken a number of various upper-level science courses, especially those related to pre-medical work like biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy. I am passionate about helping others achieve their long-term goals, which starts in understanding their class material! I am all about making real-world connections to the topics I struggle with and those that I help others with -- if we can connect it to our lives or something out in the world, or create a strong analogy for something more abstract, it tends to be easier to understand and apply long-term, instead of simply memorizing it to get through the test! I will be the Teaching Assistant next fall of the advanced biochemistry class I took last semester, and plan to also continue next spring as a TA for the physiology and/or anatomy classes I'm currently taking. My previous experience comes from helping my classmates, and volunteering to tutor kids in grade school with their science courses as well. I look forward to helping you with your classes and reaching your goals!

I first started teaching just by being open to answering classmates questions and asking them questions myself, and realizing the value of sharing our knowledge with one another. Sometimes one of my classmates has a really good grasp on something that I just do not get, and they've been able to help me draw connections or make analogies to better understand it. I've also been able to reciprocate that help with them, and it's always an awesome feeling when the people you're helping have that "light-bulb moment"! These experiences led me to want to continue tutoring on a more professional scale because I want to be able to support my fellow STEM lovers, even through the hardest of topics, so that we can all reach our end goals!

I've always been a strong proponent of helping my classmates and having study groups with them, and I love being able to teach someone the way I think about a concept or problem and seeing it help them approach it in a better way. I've also volunteered to tutor kids in grade school a few times and that is always a fun and fulfilling experience! I am also planning to be the Teaching Assistant this fall for the biochemistry course that I took last fall, and I'm hoping to continue doing well in my physiology and anatomy courses I'm currently taking so that I can be a TA for at least one of them next spring.

About the lesson

I first start out by asking them to identify any specific topics they struggle with. Sometimes that can be hard to do, especially if the whole class just feels overwhelming and a student can't pinpoint what they are struggling with. If the student does know where they struggle, then of course we can start there with practice problems, especially any assigned by the teacher that the student isn't confident with. I will also ask if they have a syllabus or some outline of the topics to be covered in the course, or specific worksheets they need to complete so I can get an idea for what sorts of questions the teacher is asking, how they're asking, and how much detail they want the student to know. If the student isn't able to pick out a few topics, and they just feel like they're struggling with the class as a whole, then we can work through the syllabus together and look back at any previous work or tests, and prepare for how to approach the upcoming work. I would try to find or prepare a set of practice questions that are comparable to their teacher's style and approach, in order to assess what problems the student can do easily, those they struggle with, and any that they are completely lost on. From there we can prioritize the harder concepts while still making time for the rest of the material even if it may come easily to the student. All in all, I want to be able to help the student think through each step of the problem, or steps of a process, and truly be able to understand why and how to reach each new step in order to end up at the correct answer or with a full understanding of the concept!

I've mostly worked with my fellow classmates over the years, so from high school through my undergraduate degree and now into my Masters program, all mostly within the STEM fields. I've also worked with a few grade-school students with their various topics!

Don't give up! For example, when I first took physiology, I got a C+. Part of it was because I'd never seen the material before, and part was because I honestly hadn't created great study habits. I felt overwhelmed, and it obviously lowered my GPA a bit. A year or so later I applied to medical school and did not get accepted anywhere, and unfortunately a big factor was my not-stellar science GPA (other classes contributed as well, not just physiology)! I took the step to attend a graduate program specifically for pre-med students to retake some of the core science classes and boost our sciene GPA -- now I'm in physiology again and just got 96% on both exams we've taken so far! It wasn't easy, and I had to be real with myself and how I need to approach my classes now if I'm really serious about achieving my goals. Once I got my mindset in the right place, I got my study habits together, and I rocked my exams! You can do it too!! Never give up on your dreams, even in the face of great trial!

I just started my Masters program in August, and my classmates and I all have varying backgrounds and took a wide range of classes during our undergraduate degrees. I've recently found that my previous classes like anatomy and physiology that I took in undergrad have been extremely helpful during my Masters program, because they've given me very strong foundations in these topics. This means that luckily a lot of the material is review for me, so I am even more able to give my fellow classmates tips and tricks that I learned during undergrad to study and remember some of these complex concepts. We are now learning about the brachial plexus in anatomy, and in class our professor went through it really fast and I talked to some of my friends who said they felt super overwhelmed. Since I'd learned about it before, I was able to go back into my undergrad anatomy notes and find the single most helpful PowerPoint slide that I utilized to understand this topic, and I sent it to my classmates in hopes that they will also be able to use it to make it less overwhelming!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it will be beneficial for both the student and the tutor if the student can try pinpointing any specific topics, or problems, or types of questions that they struggle with most. Maybe that can start with a conversation with their classroom teacher, gaining feedback on any recent homework or exams. However, this can be tricky, and it is most certainly not required -- many classes have interwoven concepts so it can seem like none of the material makes sense if a student is struggling with something! If the student isn't able to pinpoint anything on their own, that just another thing a tutor would be more than happy to help with! Another thing for students to ponder is what they think their "learning style" is -- visual, reading, etc. -- what tools have helped in the past and how can we try to apply them moving forward? This will help us work together to find the best ways to approach difficult concepts!
