About Phillip

I'm just a rising third year student from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) who wants to help students understand difficult topics in organic chemistry (and general chemistry) and hopefully, they get to love this specific subject. My goal is to make organic chemistry become more of an approachable subject because I know many of you have heard about horror stories of organic chemistry from past stuents, but I assure you organic chemistry is frankly more intuitive and easier to understand than high school general chemistry. But in all, I hope you choose me as your tutor and here are my past experiences as a tutor.

I've tutored students from Culver City Middle School and High School in chemistry (honors and AP) for two years, and I've also taught university students about organic chemistry as a Learning Assistant at UCLA.

I have taken Chemistry Honors and AP Chemistry in high school with A's in both courses and received a 4 on the AP exam. Also, I have taken three organic chemistry courses plus one organic chemistry lab at UCLA, receiving A's in all of these courses.

About the lesson

My first approach to tutoring is asking my students what they have known so far in their classes, and then asking them if they need clarification of certain topics that they have had already discussed in their classes (or online classes). Next, I usually assess what they know with an example or two of that specific topic. Lastly, I usually take multiple approaches to see what my students need help on (i.e. open and closed questions, alternative explanations, drawing mechanisms, etc.)

I have worked with middle school, high school, and university students.

I am very fond of my time working as a Learning Assistant at UCLA when I had to teach my students organic chemistry online (on Zoom). Honestly, I thought this experience would've been a disaster, but because of the encouraging feedback I got from my students for my role as a Learning Assistant and the support of my fellow Learning Assistants, I found this experience to be the most worthwhile and amazing educational experience in recent times.
