About Nathan

Hello!

I am an enthusiastic and highly qualified high school chemistry teacher, and I have an unapologetic love for my subject!

I fell in love with chemistry when I was a sophomore in high school- I always thought it was the coolest subject I had ever taken, and I never felt more accomplished than when I mastered the content. I want to make sure that all of my students feel the same way, about both the magic of chemistry, and the feelings of accomplishment that come from understanding.

I am a first-year licensed teacher (currently at the start of my second semester!), but I graduated from Purdue University in 2020 before becoming a paraprofessional in the spring of 2021, which helped me work with a wide variety of students for nearly every subject. I work happily in the Greater Lafayette area of Indiana.

I have my Bachelors of Science in both Biochemistry and Chemistry Education, and I graduated with a combined GPA of 3.42. I am officially licensed to teach Physical Science and Chemistry.

Seeing students transition from unsure to completely mastering the content gives me a great joy that I just can't get anywhere else in life!

In college, I was halfway through my junior year when I realized I wanted to teach. I had many fond memories of the school environment that persisted with me throughout college, and I wanted to be able to give a student those fond memories as well. Teaching and tutoring has always been a natural fit for me!

I am a fully-licensed teacher in the state of Indiana. I can display or confirm my credentials as needed, but I have just over two semesters of direct experience teaching chemistry and ICP (Integrated Chemistry and Physics) to high school students. My dual degrees from Purdue certainly prepared me for the work load!

First, I greatly appreciate the chance to meet them! I tutor online, which I've had plenty of experience doing; I am proficient with Zoom and Google Meet, so either of those facetime applications works for me to meet my client!

By meeting with them in person, I can clarify how my available hours work, and they can communicate their needs to me (would they rather use my tutoring services to walk through new material with them, or simply review material?). An initial Zoom or Google Meeting is quite necessary, as I only do online tutoring due to the ongoing pandemic.

I worked as a paraprofessional in the spring of 2021, so I worked with many children with IEP's and 504 plans, on a variety of subjects (but a lot of math!). I also taught general chemistry courses (and still do), and during my student teaching I also assisted with Honors students. I have a wide variety of experiences, all in all.

Don't ever settle for one teacher if you have any doubts or uncertainties- you need to find a teacher or tutor who you feel comfortable with, and who explains things in a way that you understand. Sometimes that takes time and energy, but once you find that connection, it makes a world of difference!

A student told me that I was their favorite teacher, even though I was a first-semester teacher. It could be that they just liked my teaching personality, but then they clarified that it was also because I always found a way to make things simpler- I cannot think of a better compliment!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How can I best clarify my wants or needs to my teacher so that they understand?

What are specific things my teacher can do that would greatly help me (take breaks every 15 minutes, show more visual aids, etc)?

I charge a standard rate of $40 an hour, but I also insist on being fair with timing. If the client and I spend the first ten minutes casually chatting before getting serious about chemistry, I do not charge for that time- nor do I charge for any final/closing remarks, or when plans are made for future meetings. Any breaks taken during a meeting by either me or the client are also not paid-for.

Lastly, I believe in the integrity and quality of an education. If my client is still notably struggling with the covered material after the course of the meeting, I will only charge a reduced rate of $25 an hour. This is obviously subject to opinion, but I don't believe in walking away from an hour of worktime with the client visibly frustrated by the content.

If a client were to abuse this trust I give them by claiming they do not understand the material after multiple sessions, then I think it would be obvious to both parties that the tutoring is not meant to be, and my assistance will be terminated in a mutual understanding.
