About Julie
I am a current Chemistry Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago (expected graduation in June 2024), and have a B.A. in Chemistry from Scripps College.
Since I was in high school I've been tutoring my peers and other students in STEM subjects, primarily in college-level General Chemistry courses. I have worked for various colleges as a private and departmental tutor, and at UofC I have worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Honors General Chemistry course during the 2019-2020 academic year. From such experiences, I have a very comprehensive understanding of how Gen Chem is taught in universities and have developed my own materials to assist students through the coursework.
I really enjoy teaching, particularly the moment where something in the student just clicks and they understand a concept they've really been working on. Since these topics don't come easily to everyone, I think a personalized approach is the best method. I often use analogies in my lectures and descriptions to try and make the material more accessible and relatable.
I started teaching from a pretty young age. I have been involved with science education outreach programs since 2005, where I would volunteer at science fairs and festivals to work activity booths to introduce others to scientific concepts in a fun environment. I found that I really like guiding others to a better understanding of STEM.

When working with a new student, I first talk through a few concepts with them to see what their level of understanding is. I ask them what topics they feel most comfortable and most uncomfortable with in order to gauge where their strengths lie so that we can have a specific plan for improving their understanding.
I have worked with students in middle school through university levels.
