About Krishna

I am a certified professional tutor and peer advisor through the College Reading & Learning Association.

It is an exceptional moment when you can finally see the light bulb go off in your students' minds and they finally understand something they had been struggling with for the past week.

I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering degree. During my time at Hopkins, I worked as a tutor and study consultant for many organizations on campus. As a Center for Student Success tutor, I held one-on-one sessions per week with athletes and special cohort students struggling in various subjects, such as chemistry, physics, fluid mechanics/transport phenomena, and thermodynamics. I helped students understand the fundamental concepts and prepared them for exams/tests. As a Learning Den tutor, I held two 1.5 hours sessions per week with six students or less who were having trouble with organic chemistry. I explained the mechanisms and walked through practice problems with my students to help them comprehend the chemistry behind the reactions instead of simply memorizing them. As a JHU study consultant, I helped students improve their studying, test-taking, note-taking and time management skills by providing them with personalized, one-on-one advice. Through these experiences, I was able to get certified as a professional tutor and peer advisor through the College Reading & Learning Association.

About the lesson

I like to get to know the student and assess where their weaknesses lie. Is it a lack of understanding of the fundamental concepts or is it more of a deep-rooted issue with overall study techniques? There are a lot of different approaches that I have learned through my experiences to help students improve their learning skills. After figuring out what approach works best for my student, I move on to the fundamental concepts that he/she may be struggling with. Once the fundamental concepts have been taught, I go through lots and lots of practice problems with my student. Students have to learn how to actively recall and utilize the information which they have acquired in an efficient manner, which is accomplished by working through problems.

I have worked with all sorts of students coming from very diverse backgrounds. For the Center for Student Success, I worked not only with athletes who had to juggle practice with their academics but also with special cohorts, such as first generation or low income students who did not have as many resources as students. As a study consultant, I have worked with students who were on academic probation and lacked motivation to complete their work. At the end of the semester, many of my students were able to earn A-/A in their respective classes by implementing proper time management and study techniques. Finally, as a Learning Den tutor, I was also able to work with students who were exceptionally bright and simply needed a little more assistance understanding certain concepts.

Find someone who has been in your place before. It is a lot easier to teach someone when you have experienced the same confusion yourself. I often find my students having difficulty with the same exact concepts that I used to struggle with, and being able to give them the same tips, tricks, and acronyms that I personally utilized allows me to ensure their success.
