About Mariya
Hi there, it's a pleasure to meet you! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Life Science Education (Magna Cum Laude) from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX. I am currently a teacher at Plainview ISD. I find life sciences the most fascinating of all the sciences! This would be subjects such as biology, genetics, anatomy, and physiology, among others. I enjoy learning new things and teaching students what I have learned. As a middle school and high school disciplinary teacher for the last four years, daily I have been helping students on all the secondary-level science courses. In college, as I worked on my upper-division courses, I also tutored introductory college-level science courses, graded English discussion boards and helped my peers with essay-writing, and was a teacher's aide in the elementary science classes.
I love finding a variety of ways to tutor students that helps them understand concepts that they might be struggling with. Every student learns differently, and there is no one way to teach a concept, but one of my favorite techniques is relating the science concept at hand to a real-life example. If a student can process a concept in a practical way, it is a lot easier to remember it rather than having to memorize a random fact. Those whom I've helped have told me that they enjoyed the way that I worked with them.
One of my favorite things to hear from students is when they say they can finally understand a concept for the first time because of the way that I explained it to them. It gives me great joy knowing that I can help make science concepts accessible to students, and it makes me excited about the work that I do!
In college, I did tutoring as a part-time job to help me pay for college. I was going to college to become a secondary science teacher. I initially applied to tutor because I got good grades in the science classes and someone recommended me to do that. As I started to tutor, I found that I really enjoyed that one-on-one interaction and that I was effectively able to help students that were struggling. As I kept doing it, I got compliments from the tutoring department head and from students, saying that I do a good job at tutoring. As I was nearing graduation, I wanted to think through what I really enjoyed doing and what I wanted to do after I graduate. Two things stood out in my mind as something I really wanted to do: tutoring and continuing to graduate school to work in a health field that allowed me to have one-on-one interactions with patients. I started researching my options. One option came up that I really got excited about. It was an opportunity to work in the disciplinary setting as a science teacher. This really excited me because I would get to use my teaching degree, but I would also be working with students one-on-one (basically tutoring every day in my own classroom) instead of teaching a whole classroom at once. And that is exactly what I have been doing the last four years and I love it! Lately, I have wanted to expand my scope to tutor online, as well.
Current: Science teacher for the past 4 years at Plainview High School: Ash Program for grades 6-12 (disciplinary setting)
Earned: Bachelor of Science in Life Science Education (Grades 7-12) from Wayland Baptist University
Past: Teacher's aide in a local elementary school's science classrooms (grades 4 and 5)
Past: Peer-tutor in college for lower-division science courses

When a student comes to me to get help on an assignment, I look over the assignment and then guide the student through the material. Usually, the process will look something like the following, but varies based on the student's need... I teach the material that the student does not understand, I guide the student through some of the problems, and then I allow the student to try the problem on their own, guiding them whenever they get stuck.
I have worked with:
- College students taking lower-division science courses
- Middle school and high school students who got in trouble at their main campuses and have to serve anywhere from 5-45days in the disciplinary setting
- Elementary students in the 4th and 5th grade science classrooms
