About Elizabeth

Everyone learns in different ways, and I love keeping this in mind when teaching kids. The kids who "just aren't getting it" are simply not being provided with different methods of learning. I love having fun and believe that lots of kids learn the most when they're excited and surprised!

I gained my experience in teaching from becoming an educator at the Kentucky Science Center. There, I taught many different subjects in many different ways. I've taught typical classroom-style lessons, got kids excited about multiple areas of science through expos, and I even performed in scripted science shows about electricity and chemistry. I've traveled all over Kentucky and Indiana teaching kids of all ages, and even some adults.

I love seeing the excitement in a kids face when they start doing something they have just learned. I've seen so many discouraged kids go from sad to shocked when they figure out that yes- you can do it too!

I started teaching when I joined the local science center as a science educator teaching kids a variety of subjects in many different mediums. I had to learn how to put together a lesson plan quickly that would be both fun and educational. I also had to learn how to scale the same lessons to fit the appropriate age groups. There are many things that I had to learn on my own, but the majority of my experience comes from experiencing other scientists and educators in how they perform their lessons.

About the lesson

I like hearing about what they know (or what they think they know), what they want to know, and what they think they need help with the most. I like to find out what their hobbies and interests are to gather a better understanding of their personality so that I can use that to teach them more efficiently. I also like to ask them where they can find accurate answers to their questions themselves. I think it's important in the growing age of technology that kids are able to distinguish false from factual information, that they know what and where their resources are for finding the answers, and how to check to see if a source is legitimate.

I have worked with all age groups, with a focus on elementary and middle school groups. I have worked with a wide range of abilities from gifted to remedial.

Look for someone you think you would be the most comfortable with and connect with the most. I've learned in my own schooling experience that I didn't retain as much information from a lecture when I didn't connect with the teacher in a more meaningful and positive way.

Before the quarantine, after my last electricity science show, a kid from the audience timidly spoke to my partner asking if he was allowed to talk to me! He was so shy and anxious that he decided not to approach me. Instead, I learned his name, called him up individually (after the show) and showed him some of the inner workings of the show and gave him a closer look at how some props worked. He got so excited that he talked to me for the rest of the hour that we were there about all sorts of things. My favorite conversation that we had was about the theoretical science of Pokemon evolution!
