About Wangmeng

Hello there! My name is Wangmeng Zhang, but I go by April. For the past two years, I taught third and fourth grade in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. I have re-located to the Philadelphia area to be closer to my family, but I would love to continue to help students achieve their full potential! I love teaching math, especially for grades 2-5! I have worked with students in 1:1 settings, small groups, and created culturally-responsive, transformational curriculum for students within the 7-10 age range.

Qualifications:

1. Certified Teacher through the State of South Dakota for Elementary education (K - 8) all subjects as well as Middle School Math education.

2. Two years of teaching experience in whole group, small group, and 1:1 settings.

3. 2 years average growth for my class as a whole this past year. Some students achieved 3 years of growth in mathematics.

I started my teaching career by joining Teach For America. I am passionate about bridging the gap in educational equity by creating and implemeting culturally responsive curriculum and teaching methods for all students regardless of income level. I trained in Phoenix Arizona in the Gila River Indian Reservation by teaching 6th grade ELA; afterwards, I taught third grade and then moved on to specialize in fourth grade math while collaborating with another fourth grade teacher to departmentalize our grade. We found much success through our methodology, as we saw two years of average growth per student in each subject.

I have two years of teaching experience as a third and fourth grade teacher as well as a teaching certification through the state of South Dakota. In addition, I have excellent PRAXIS scores for elementary education (K-8) and Middle School Math.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students first. I will ask them about their favorite topics in school and what their interests are outside of school. Afterwards, I will try to build curriculum or use their interests to help them understand the topics they are learning.

My primary experience is with students of color in low income backgrounds in rural settings. However, I am capable of teaching students of all backgrounds and demographics.

Find a teacher that will help you learn a topic in a multitude of ways. I developed my own methodologies and strategies to teach 40 students mathematics because each child learns differently. Also, find a teacher who can relate to your interests and isn't afraid to tell you they are unsure about something. Learning is a process that should be done together!

I still share letters with one of my students from South Dakota. She loves to read and write, and she grew three years in math this past year through my instruction. We will be doing a pen-pal exchange for the next year, and every letter I receive reminds me of how much I miss working with students and how brilliant children truly are.
