My algebra teacher in high school saw that I had an attitude for math, as well as socializing, so she encouraged me to tutor my class mates for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. From there, I discovered both a talent, and a love for tutoring.
I have been tutoring math since I was a sophomore in high school (I'm a sophomore in college now). I have also worked in the tutoring department at Montgomery College for almost 2 years.

We let the students dictate the process. What we mean is that we let the students tell us how well they think they know the subject matter, where they feel they can grow, and what they believe is their biggest struggle in the subject. From there, we ask general questions about the student's hobbies and interests to determine what they are like and how they think. After all of that, we begin to focus on strengthening where the students are already strong (utilizing a teaching style that is more in line with how they personally receive information), then working outward to topics that are more challenging to them.
I've worked with a wide range of students who have had different levels of confidence in their mathematical abilities. Nonetheless, I have been successful in teaching those students, as long as they are willing to learn. I believe where there is a will, there's always a way!
Don't be a passive agent in your education. Ask a lot of questions. Ask them until you get it, or until your tutor gives up (hopefully the former happens first). Know why you're using one formula over another, or why you have to solve a problem a particular way. Make sure you really understand what it is you are learning and please resist the urge to pretend that you do. Lastly, you are NOT less intelligent if you struggle with math!!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure you have given a genuine attempt to solve a problem. When you approach your teachers, tell them what you have tried to do first. Then, bring your questions to them. Don't be afraid to be honest too! If you're not honest about what you need, you probably won't get it
