About Barbara

For more than 25 years I've been helping actors and playwrights to begin or advance their careers.

I tailor my coaching to meet the needs of individuals--from beginner to experienced. I provide you with a toolbox of skills you can draw on in any situation, from auditioning to performing in a production. I work at a conveniently located Manhattan theater.

I began as an actor when a young teenager, later added directing and then playwriting. My training runs the gamut from technical to method. As well as a receiving a B.A. in Theater Arts from Adelphi University, I studied professionally with Broadway director Arthur Storch and private acting coaches Sandra Seacat and Roz Vallero.

My plays have been produced in the U.S., France and Germany. I directed in the U.S., Paris and at the National Theatre in London. For more information, including my numerous awards, see my website. (concealed information)

I started by exchanging coaching for auditions with colleagues. Some colleagues started referring others to me, and I charged them a nominal fee.

I have a B.A. in Theater Arts from Adelphi University in New York. Prior to relocating to NYC, I attended the Summer Theater Intensive for High School students at Temple University. I also was a member of the professional theater workshop in Philadelphia directed by Rober Sickinger, attending weekly for a year. In NYC, I attended Arthur Storch's professional workshop for nearly 6 years and worked privately with acting coaches Sandra Seacat and Roz Vallero.

Listening to what the student wants/needs. Determining how best to provide the tools to assist. The first session also includes an overview of what we can subsequently work on with detail and depth. I provide each student with a toolbox of skills that can be drawn on as needed in any situation from audition to production. I have experience working with actors to create a one-person autobiographical play and with playwrights to shape and structure specific projects.

All types, from beginners to advanced. I can give beginners the basic tools of acting and experienced or advanced students coaching in areas they want to explore in their work.

Interview the prospective teachers. Be prepared to ask for what you want. Look for a teacher who will encourage the joy of acting on stage, who knows how to share her joy as you work together. And don't believe that the more you pay the teacher, the better he or she will be.

I'm always delighted to see the work of my peers. On a personal level, having a new play of mine produced every year provides an experience that I'm more than fond of--I'm thrilled with every one. I love the collaborative aspect of theater. A play only comes fully alive on a stage with actors and designers and tech staff. I co-direct the premiere of each play. Over the years, I have auditioned and directed many actors, learning from every experience do's and don'ts that I share with students.
