About John
My study of Michael Chekhov technique began in 1981 when I became protege to Jack Colvin, who was Michael Chekhov's protege. I have used this technique for every role I've played since then, from classic to contemporary parts; and taught side-by-side with Mr Colvin at the Michael Chekhov Studio until his death in 2005. I conduct classes and workshops for theatre companies, colleges, conservatories and festivals, and coach privately.
After years of participation in all the classes my teacher conducted, he began to urge me more and more to teach, and I eventually began conducting excercise classes for him, and then taught side-by-side with him in the classes he taught at his studio, the Michael Chekhov Studio, in Los Angeles, CA.
I did many roles in college, but was essentially untrained when I began studying Michael Chekhov Technique in 1981. Since then, it has been my process for working, and the solution to every problem I have faced as an actor. In Tragedy, Farce, Comedy, and Drama, I have used this Technique and only this technique to create characters and structure performances.

First, I feel it's best to get an idea of where they are at in their development. Then, introduce and incorporate different elements of the Technique in a way that enhances and stimulates what they're already doing. After that, the student tends to dictate the pace and order of things.
college level up to professional.
Find someone you trust. Certainly, experience with the Technique is, I think important. Someone who can do what they teach. Talking is only a starting point. If they can't illustate or demonstrate what they mean, be careful. Don't settle for a cheerleader, however sincere they may be, you need someone who can make the subject tangible to you.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's best to have a clear idea of what their goal really is. Why do you want to act? What do you want to act? Are you dedicated and disciplined? To learn this, or any other technique, one has to give themselves over to it, to really learning it, not simply understanding it.
