About Eli

I offer patient, supportive, relaxed, rigorous instruction that draws on my extensive experience as a performing musician and teacher. My offerings are comprehensive enough to take an absolute beginner to a high level of proficiency, and challenge an advanced player to pursue an even greater standard of excellence. I spare no effort to make sure my students feel they are in my care and that our lessons are helping them to love and explore music as fully as they wish.

I have found that shared study music is one of the best ways to build meaningful relationships with other people. I have been lucky to know firsthand the joy of having a teacher who is deeply invested in inspiring and cultivating my own love of music, and in my personal development in music. The defining joy of my life as a teacher is to be able to pass on the same thing to my own students.

Teaching was a natural outgrowth of my life as a musician, and my desire to share the guitar with other people. I started teaching when I was 17 and have continued ever since!

I hold bachelor's and master's degrees in classical guitar from one of the finest conservatories in the world--the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music--where I also taught as an associate instructor during my graduate studies. I have several years' worth of private teaching experience independent of my association with the Jacobs School of Music, as well.

About the lesson

I find it essential to make the first priority understanding a new student's goals and interests, then proposing a near-term plan and a long-term plan as to how I think we ought to go about our studies together. I find it equally essential to give my students a thorough grounding in my concept of technique as early as possible, so as to help them develop the ability to independently analyze and resolve the difficulties they may encounter in their playing, and to give them tools to guide their own learning.

I have worked with students as young as five and as old as 70. I have worked with absolute beginners, with amateur musicians, advanced players, and students preparing to audition for collegiate music study. I have also taught students from all over the world in the elective guitar program at Indiana University.

I would advise students interested in pursuing lessons to seek out a teacher who is patient, caring, and methodical. I would encourage them to consider that the flashiest player is not always the best teacher, and that clear communication and an agile mind are at least as important as agile fingers!

One of my proudest and happiest moments as a musician was performing Franz Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in a duo with word-renowned double bassist DaXun Zhang in 2019 at the International Society of Bassists' annual convention.
