About Lidia

9 years ago, while I was still in high school, I spearheaded the development of an afterschool math lab where I would spend an hour each day helping other students in my school who were struggling with their grades, homework, or a particular math topic. This experience, and the satisfaction I felt through helping others succeed, propelled me into a career as a teacher. I spent my college summers working as a math instructor/camp counselor for middle school students and learning about educational equity and trauma-informed instructional practices. When students struggle or act up in school, teachers must think about the root causes and reflect on ways to meet that student's unique needs to clear the way for learning. Having been in the classroom, I recognize how challenging that is to do for a roster of 150 or more students each day. Individual tutoring is an excellent way to address that challenge to educational equity. While students may not always get the one-on-one support they need in class, they can certainly get that through tutoring. I am a lifelong educator, passionate about helping students overcome obstacles and about creating safe, inclusive, and joyful learning environments.

About the lesson

Technology is a brilliant tool for bridging gaps and forming connections between math concepts. Throughout my teaching career, I have accumulated an array of resources and activities that bring tricky math concepts to life and make math engaging. I believe in mastery learning and the importance of building up robust foundations. Therefore, my approach to tutoring begins with discovering the root cause of a student's misconception and filling in their gaps from the bottom up. A typical lesson will include an engaging activity, foundational skills practice, discussion of a student's misconceptions, attitudes towards math, and goals, and targeted work aligning with the student's goals. The lesson will end with a check-for-understanding to assess progress. I am goal-oriented, patient, and creative in my teaching approach. Can't wait to help you reach your math-related goals!
