About Karen

As I have already mentioned, I have many years of professional experience as both classroom teacher and educational therapist. I also spent many years teaching creative writing to kids after school or in workshops. I started teaching when I was only 19 years old. My first teaching position was a a Spanish bilingual teachers aide in an inner city public elementary school. Later, I accrued over 10 years of experience working in public schools as a literacy specialist and educational therapist for kids living in foster care and other non-typical home settings. I became very comfortable with youth in crisis or those that dislike authority. I can assess the students needs and write an individualized education plan to help remediate academic gaps, and I can also address any psycho-social issues that may be contributing to learning problems. I have a laid back, casual teaching style but I can accomplish big things

About the lesson

I’m expert at teaching youth ages 4-18, having had experience as a resource specialist, a bilingual Spanish classroom teacher, a Special Ed teacher, and as an Educational Therapist. I have extensive knowledge of Individualized Educational Plans, Resource Specialist Program, Foster Care System, Juvenile Detention Program, and other common programs that exist in conjunction with the public school system. I have often been “the only person who could get through to a student.” I enjoy a challenge and am not easily intimidated by oppositional attitudes. I can assess a students needs and identify areas needing remediation and will present detailed plans and progress reports. If a student needs are widespread and cover many academic areas, I will usually be able to identify psycho-social issues that are the underlying cause of the deficit. In these cases, these issues need to be addressed alongside any academic remediation for any progress to be made. My lessons will be individualized and planned in agreement with all interested adults and most importantly, the student. It may seem like I have a laid-back, casual attitude but I have always managed to accomplish big changes with my students. I can also work with small groups. I love teaching creative writing and poetry the most, but am competent in all basic subject areas.
