About Stephen
I am an experienced and well-qualified teacher of science, PhD educated and with 18 years of experience teaching science in various institutions, in London and the East Midlands. Prior to teaching I worked for 10 years as a research scientist. This combined educational and scientific experience has provided me with a strong science background which I can use to help students of all ages and abilities. I have an extensive knowledge of science across the range of subjects, but especially in Chemistry and Physics up to A-level. I feel I am able to help students with any areas of weakness, whilst building upon those areas in which they are strong. I try to provide a range of tasks and activities in each session and adapt these according to each subject and to how the student is performing. I try to assess and support using quizzes, exam questions, verbal and written tasks, and do these in a manner which helps and supports the student. I am comfortable with online and face-to-face methods of delivery. Some more detail about me: Qualifications/Knowledge I possess a first-class degree in Chemistry and Physics and a PhD in Chemistry. I am also PGCE qualified teacher, with QTS status, in secondary school science. These qualifications mean that I have a very secure science knowledge base and have a background in teaching and learning for students from KS2 to KS5. Teaching Experience Following the award of my PGCE in 2004 I have taught a range of science subjects in schools and FE colleges in London and the East Midlands. I have thus taught the full range of sciences in secondary schools from year 7 to 11, and have taught A-level Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and Environmental Science at A-level to post-16 learners. I have also taught BTEC Applied Science and Engineering. Tutoring Experience I have spent part of the past academic year working part-time as a tutor. I have delivered tutorials in Science at KS3 and GCSE level, and Chemistry at A-level. I am comfortable in various settings and am willing to adapt to the student’s needs. In some cases, I have delivered sessions online, partly due to student illness. However, I have mostly taken sessions in person either in the student’s home, or in their school, or in some cases at a neutral venue. The students have had a variety of requirements. In some cases, they were aiming for high grades and needed extra support beyond which they could receive at school. In other instances, they required support to help them catch up with lost learning from the pandemic. Scientific Experience Prior to my teaching career I worked as a research scientist. I spent five years with Unilever Research, on Merseyside, developing laundry products. I previously spent five years at The University of Edinburgh performing academic research in the department of Physics.
